"a good poet serves a long apprenticeship", these words immediately caught my attention. Poets are prophets, people filled with perspicacity and highly observant, those who read and write between the lines. Your poem does this
Thank you

That's what happens when you get dragged out shopping with a hangover.
Cynical bar stewards.
There's nowhere for wobbly 70 yr. olds to sit.
Toilets have been shut for months, but the cafe's open.
Message is- "spend your money here, but don't do any re-cycling".

A poem written from the heart with significant power. Abuse in all its manifestations is evil and damaging. Poetry can be a cathartic means of releasing the pain. In this poem you have succeeded in doing just that.
Thank you for this

Bloody well said mate. Yes "Winter Wishes" does reflect the latest ONS figures about a decline in those who describe themselves as Christians. Christmas is the incarnation where God entered his own creation in the person of Jesus Christ. The word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.
A strident poem which has my wholehearted appreciation.
Thank you
Keith

Thank you to all who liked this poem and especially to Helene, Uilleam, Kevin and Stephen for their comments. Kevin your comment describes well my present circumstances. We are going through a difficult time which I fear may be prolonged by external events, particularly with the war in Ukraine. I appreciate all those who have enjoyed this poem as you are all a source of considerable encouragement.

Another fine poem of memory, John. My dad worked in Customs and Excise (London Docks) but he could still mix concrete and lay a patio. Lots of the local dads could do that, it seemed.

Austerity used to be an aspect of life much to be admired amongst the Christian religious communities I knew.
It meant keeping life simple, avoiding distractions of mindless consumerism / entertainment.
Now the concept of "Austerity" has literally been perverted for evil ends.
Politicians have turned it into an instrument of cruelty as they seek to persuade us that paying taxes to pay for the NHS, Fire and Social Services is not for the rich.
The poor and vulnerable must learn to go without, so as to maintain the wealthy in the lifestyle to which they are "entitled".

Not my guilt.
Those responsible for carrying out such atrocities are guilty.
Those in high places who profitted from conniving with the perpetrators are guilty.
Those in positions of power and influence who turned a blind eye are guilty.

A (poetic) question occurred to me recently.
"Has the exact shape of a cloud ever been repeated...ever ever?"
The answer is, "probably not".
And yet; they do have a pattern; clouds do have typical recognisable shapes according to the kind of weather they bring / coincide with.

I'm not a monarchist, and my first instinct has always been to defend whoever I perceive to be the wronged and the underdog.
However, in recent years I've learned at much cost to my pride, to be more cautious in my reactions to stories such as these.
Let me say this: regardless of your colour, be you Jew, Muslim, Christian or of no faith, if you are fraudulent or mendacious in your claims / accusations, you are playing straight into the hands of those who intend to do real harm to genuinely oppressed people.
As we speak, I see the truly xenophobic gobshites, rousing their gullible rabble, rubbing their hands with glee, and saying "look I told you so"!

I'm working on something in a similar vein with the theme of:
"Jam Tomorrow".
The phrase has its origins in Alice in Wonderland...most appropriate given the epidemic of lunacy which is Brexit.😭
'Jam tomorrow' originated in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, 1871, in which the White Queen offers Alice 'jam to-morrow':
'I'm sure I'll take you with pleasure!' the Queen said. 'Twopence a week, and jam every other day.'
Alice couldn't help laughing, as she said, 'I don't want you to hire ME - and I don't care for jam.'
'It's very good jam,' said the Queen.
'Well, I don't want any TO-DAY, at any rate.'
'You couldn't have it if you DID want it,' the Queen said. 'The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday - but never jam to-day.'
'It MUST come sometimes to "jam to-day,"' Alice objected.
'No, it can't,' said the Queen. 'It's jam every OTHER day: to-day isn't any OTHER day, you know.'
'I don't understand you,' said Alice. 'It's dreadfully confusing!'
Easy money was called 'money for jam'; for example, The Athenaeum, 1919 - "The great use of jam in the Army ... originated a number of phrases, such as 'money for jam' (money for nothing)."
Socialists often used to ridicule the capitalist system as offering the empty promise of 'Jam tomorrow'. A quotation attributed to the labour politician Tony Benn in 1969 was "Some of the jam we thought was for tomorrow, we've already eaten."

All this nonsense utterly baffles me as I have, throughout my life, been asked questions about the place of my birth and the background of my parents. I don't see this as some sinister attempt to undermine me or my identity. MC raises a good point about nationality and ethnicity. I am white, English as were my parents and grandparents. So what.
Good poem
Thanks
Keith

Denial or delusion? Interesting point. Do you refer to my own
comments or the trust placed in Lady Hussey over six decades
by the late Head of the Commonwealth - a Queen who prized
that institution and is hardly likely to have kept a "racist" so
close to her side. There is the modern inclination to confuse
"nationality" with racial origins.to take into account. Lady
Hussey was following up on the adopted name and identity
of this figure from a charity that was/is closer to "racism" than
her own persistent probing. Check its raison d'etre.
