Thanks for taking the time to read David. I think you read one of the few that I wrote in free rhyme - LOL! Like you, I do like to rhyme and found it hard breaking the habit. Free verse does gove you a lot of freedom over the language you use though which can't be a bad thing. Till we meet again.

A clever one Cynthia. Girl power eh? Just think what we could do if we ever broke free of that blade, organised ourselves or trampled on it?

Many congratulations to both winners. Very well deserved.
It was a treat to see all the performers and people are still talking about it tonight. I hope the people at the BBC enjoyed it as much as everyone else seemed to.
Janet.

Hi David,
thankyou very much for the pictures. Can you find one with no shadows?
Thankyou for the offer to send a cd. It really is very kind of you.
I've been reading your poems here and enjoyed them. They feel light hearted and 'uses of summer' heartfelt. You should treat us to more soon. :-)

Hi Dave and thanks for the email. I do understand the difficulty and wish you luck.
I have been to the Bards once and went to the slam at Tallulahs recently. Also Wirral words.
Not sure when i'll go again though. Wigan is home for me. :-)
Thanks for your comment on my poem too and you're right, there is so much around us in every day life to write about. I like to make inanimate objects come to life, though i don't always fully succeed.
Janet.

I wrote it for the Dalai Lama (not about him). Most Buddhists I 've met have a sense of humour, and some schools of Buddhism have a history of absurdism, irreverance, and jokiness.

Hi Freda, no there is only one (William Yeats). Most of his stuff is modernist for several reasons:
1. Whilst he did all that celtic twilight stuff, he also did an awful lot of stuff that had themes that could only come from urban living and his work shows that he is exposed to both the convenience of modern living and also its stressfulness. The lake isle of innisfree is a good example of this last, but also there are such colections as meditations in a time of civil war. Examples of the latter include so much of his material that shows increased solcialisaion and access to culture that comes with city living with so much stuff about public gardens and theatres etc. He was brought up a rational atheist which was in keeping with the modern era and logical posistivism as a doninating strand to modernist philosophy. His refrains especially, but also to a large extent his stanzas are not often verses and they resist classical breakdown methods. This last arises form the fact that Yeats harked back to the ancient Irish accentual rhythms and he is the earliset modernist I know of to break with the strict long/short syllable metering of the classical period and to start writing according to stresses in that particular way. He also used semiotics and referencing to a great extent, again characteristically modern.

A thoughtful and though provoking poem Janet. Sorry but we really can't be talking armchairs here chaps. No one can be complacent about love and I'm sure even in the hardiest of relationships lovers must wonder how the ravages of time will take their toll. I like this poem Janet.

Hi Janet, very clever, I thought you was having a saucy moment again, not that theres anything wrong with that!!
No I didn't see the twist coming, like Steve I never do or try to! Lovely lines, (may have changed the word leisure for 'my' but only a thought) great stuff see you soon Jeff XX

Hi Dan, interesting stuff, todays society being as dangerous as it is contributes to all this and of course bulling alwasys has been and probably always will be a problem unless you stand up to it.
Just one thing about the poem, I would use the line 'enough is enough' further up the poem somehwere and make the last line 'stand for what you believe', just a thought, cheers Jeff

Hi Dave,
Enjoyed this - clever and so very true. Even - or maybe especially - the male of the species has precious little self-control when it comes to affectations of the heart. (Well maybe it's just me being a softie!)

Awww thanks for your interest Dave - have hit a bit of a dry spell - think I am very tired and in need of a holiday. Also much of my poetry seems to be performance oriented - sounds great on a stage cos I like to ham it up - but not so good on paper. Where do you live? If you live commuting distance of Wigan you should try to make the Tudor - there are some great poets - and ones who don' t take themselves too seriously - such a fun night. Bye for now.

Hi Dermot, I found this interesting considering the discussion about modernist forms that we were having. I am still puzzled by your reference to Yeats, Is there more than one Yeats? I cant find anything modernist in my collected Yeats.

Not so mysterious, Steve. The idea comes originally from an East Indian fable if I recall correctly ... an analogy to teach the power of 'brain washing'. It totally fascinated me. Please post your cinquains. I'd love to post some diamante too. Why not! Such poetry dies a sad death as performance renditions unless the audience is specifically prepared to receive them. Even then, the words fly by so quickly it's hard to absorb the thought.

Hi Dan, hope you're okay mate, just catching up!
Really like this, great stuff, just a couple of observations - I would leave out the following bits I've bracketed -
As the animal in me sees the animal in you (and vice versa)
(We know) our connection is growing between us like lightening
vice versa didn't sound right, and would split the following line in two -
And the intensity will eventually be two irresistible forces/ forces which will meet in middle
up to you mate, hope that helps, great stuff though, best wishes Jeff
