Hi Freda,
thankyou for your comment on my poem.
I often wonder where the inspiration comes from.
I know it comes from many different sources so i thank you also for the Anglo-Saxon reference.

Crikey, Anthony, do you always dress like that on the clifftops of Devon? And yes, do call in and perform / read at a NW poetry club. Once you get used to the poisonous politics and monstrous egos thrashign around, we are quite a nice crowd.

Hello there people - thanks to everyone who's taken the trouble to comment on the piece, including those who don't like it. Just wanted to put it into context quickly. It was written in 2005 as a response to the outlook and policies of the Bush administration (not as a general anti-American rant). I've always thought Bush was a six-foot human glove puppet - the piece really deals with the somewhat sinister neo-con
figures in the background with their hands up the puppet. People such as a prominent US senator who in all seriousness insisted that Spongebob Squarepants was indeed gay and a threat to society's morals. Extreme right wing politicians who courted the fundamentalist Christian vote and who resorted to the cheap rhetoric of television's evangelist preachers whilst taking America in a disturbing direction. In any event it was written as a performance piece rather than something for the page and should probably be heard live. Although I haven't performed it since last November's US election night and don't intend to as the Cheneys and Rumsfeld's of this world no longer wield power. Thank fuck. And thank fuck Barack Obama was elected. Cheers, Elvisx

This is a superb poem Sophie - it rings so many bells for me. Love the use of cleansing imagery and the frustration you get across. Love the 'compressed hot rock of despair'. Could quote the whole poem in fact. Such unusual imagery and emotions that I can identify with - though it never quite gets me to attack the housework so enthusiastically. Just love it.

I was actually only refering to one specific series of incidents, perhaps I should have made it clear that the people who dont contribute anything- YOU DO! as you write and take part. It was the spambots and just a couple of people who actually posted zero poems and made zero comments on anyones work. just one incidence, dotn worry sweetie and thanks for discussing the health and safety poem!!

An interesting analogy Dave - will you, won't you. This poem captures well the lows we can all feel now and again. With a few exceptions, I think the soul is pretty irrepressable - often it is just a question of time.

Hi Cynthia,
Good to see a perfectly executed cinquain here. I always find formal poetry an interesting challenge, and useful for getting past those "fallow" periods we all have. This is a very profound statement - although I would hesitate to liken any woman to a pachyderm! :-)
Regards,
A.E.

Hi Elvis

Effective and powerful, a worthy poem of the month.

However, and I hope I'm not being pedantic, the US Christian scene is far more diverse than one might imagine from some UK media reports. Have you run across Jim Wallis? (e.g. 'God's Politics'). www.theooze.com is one of many possible entry points to the emerging church thing which is trying to wrestle honestly with the complexities of our modern world. This isn't to recommend everything in those or similar sources, just to say the poem, while being (unfortunately) spot on, is only part of the picture

Best wishes - I'll be looking out for your stuff

Such an unusual poem Tomas - and so classical in style. I am not brilliant at history or folklore but I am guessing this must be based on some local legend? If I were the wife, I would have suspected the husband of knocking on the wall himself, to spook me and stop me from demanding a door...An enjoyable read.

Thanks for the comment Tomas. (I don't know how to add the accent) I have just been reading quite a lot of Yeats and I see you are a storyteller like him.
I am not too sure about too much use of 'did' as an auxiliary verb, mainly because I think anything repeated a lot has an effect on the balance of the poem. Maybe you have a particular reason for that construction though. It doesn't spoil the story though.
