A very poignant and moving piece of writing drawing on obviously personal experiences to give it such impact. A poem that can, like Gus says, be accessed on various levels. No one could ever call you a "non person" now sweet pea!!!

I do love the snow and it's ironing effect, everything becoming rounded. Though its hard to get around after snow I'm always sad to see it go and there's something about it being washed away by rain that for me feels wrong. Almost as though, since it took the time to cover everything it should be allowed to melt in it's own time rather than be sluiced lol! Lovely poem.

Hello Loviness

Its so good to hear you again ,

I have signed on especially to reply ...

I have listened to this wonderful poem three times and read it many more times and it speaks to me in differing voices. Mainly of the intelligent modern woman buried by the busy man, once buried ... belittled, be valued and bewildered...

I can well imagine the molton lava of frustration that you discribe as Angry Lazerus....

I don't think I agree with Dave... but I wish I did .... Shite marks on many of the blogs should be gifted by admin... they probably haven't enough.

anyway back to your poem ... it was superb and thought prevoking.... and as usual beautifully performed.

Hope to see you soon and dont worry about being cold at Jeff's gigs... I'll keep you warm.

Gus x

Hi Isobel, thanks for your comments on Rewind.

I enjoyed "Upon Disappearing" I'm almost at that disappeared point myself and clawing my way back with "poems, other people's poems..."

I especially liked, "this graphite emptied page / of scratchings blown away" what wonderful lines and how poingnantly they express the nothingness. Touched me deeply.

What a contrast. If I read your last poem correctly, it is about the way that poor quality poetry is dumped on WOL like spam email in our inboxes. By contrast, this one is about the extraordinary effect that a good poem can have on us. Connecting with our most potent memories and stirring us deeply.

A vivid description of an extreme case of a common and painful experience - we've all felt at times that we're disappearing but it doesn't often get written about.

Yes there is that to snow - it makes things look pretty for a while. I'm not sure my neighbour welcomes it much though - having had his fence knocked down twice this year and once last year by cars sliding on it...
Your poem reminds me of how I would love to bury dog foulers in ten tons of something very ugly and steaming.

Greg. Yes, you're absolutely right about Beeching/Betjeman.Just don't like "Efficiency!". Trains and poems suit each other somehow, I suppose. About getting my poems published - unless someone is going to pay me, and that's unlikely, it's not a big deal for me. I'm happy enough publishing online, I guess.I do enter poems in competitions now and again. The gambling man in me likes the idea of winning hundreds, even thousands of pounds in return for a few quid.

Aw, glad you liked East Budleigh, Isobel. We stayed in a camping coach there for a number of Easters in the early 60s. The train went past us on the next track. The last time we went I got pneumonia and spent a week in hospital, and soon afterwards graduated into long trousers and to grammar school, and to being bawled out by my surname. The line was closed about three years later, and thus became a perfect symbol of early childhood: something you can really never go back to. I've tried writing this poem in a number of ways and never got it quite right; this is the version I'm happiest with.

theres nothing wrong with that we all on the whole do as we have always done or more accurately what we feel most comfortable doing, comfort zones etc

we only change when something catastrophic or generally life threatening happens is it not such a bad thing to never be put in that position apart from whence our time comes? ill stop now as im just waffling.....

i do agree though time is entirely a man made obsession in my opinion, mans quest for absolute control of everything is begining to wear more than a little thin. anyways cheers banksy ;-)

Maybe once the child becomes a commuter some of the magic in life is lost, tarnished. Life, routine, responsibility kill that sense of wonder - make us too busy to take it on board.

Well done you for pulling one out of the bag so quickly!

I like the way you manage to convey that life is a journey and the fact that none of us really 'grow up' - just move on.

I'm assuming the last verse is about after-life where we finally become connected to what is important and leave all the materialism behind.

I like it Janet! x

Ann, thanks for reading Ghazal (In snow), Of course it is the hardest thing to get enough rhymes before the refrain and more difficult still to make them sound 'unforced'. In a traditional performance the audience would be all attension waiting to see how clever or inovative the poet is when each rhyme is revealed, rather like a punch line in a joke. Win
