Lack of DIY skills? If you say so. I share those shortcomings, mate. But literature? I won't have it! This is a work of art, John, just as your daughters are.

Lovely. You're in a rich vein of form at the moment, John. Interesting structure - has it got a name (I'm very ignorant in these matters)?

Thanks, All. Would you believe I was reading Chaucer's 'Prologue' (modern English) just yesterday, and found the same idea within the first twenty lines! I can't wait to dip into the Middle English again to see the original words, but - got to find my copy first.

Hi Elaine Thank you for your observations. Glad you liked 'Belt' The line with the long Johns was cut and paste from another part of the poem during the editing process and hes therefore become a bit disconnected from its neighbours. I will have a look at it again. Thanks for pointing it out. Win x

Ann, I know you've turned off comments for In Ealing, but I just had to say that the last stanza is one of the most powerful things you've written, and the poem as a whole is very effective and moving. "Angry with angels" is arresting ... might be a good alternative title.

This is inspirational, Dave. I fully agree with Laura (again!) including the lines about the leaf and the angel. For me the possibility of redemption hinted at in the end is very touching. So many great themes.

Bird singing through the night?
Very probably a robin - they do.
Birds have only got 3 songs though -
"Cripes! I'm outta here" (alarm)
"O sole mio" (courtship)
"You're gonna get your f*king head kicked in" (territory).

A wonderful narrative - well done!
"Marooned harmony" doesn't work though "harmonise with those silent screams" ...maybe.
Any way it's a wonderful sinewy rope of visions.

Very wry and knowing with such sly humour. "One day there'll be grandchildren whose names will be forgotten;" is such an excellent line: my in-laws constantly call their grandchildren by their children's names! "if I'd shot you when I met you by now I'd be out of prison / and I know how much you'd like me to go down." is very witty. An very amusing read with great sturcture.

There is a change in tone in the poem but basically what you are saying is quite clear-cut I found: between birth and death we fill up life with the clutter of living, all the while, somewhere in the background, we know it is keeping the boredom of life at bay - what else would we be doing other than the busy, busy, busy of actually doing nothing at all. David, I hope you chose to keep writing - it can keep you the right side of it all and perhaps communication is the best of all we can do. BTW I very much agree with Steve's comment on those lines - excellent.

Well spotted Ray. Have corrected the spelling. Interesting concept having more than one funeral.
Yes it is my imagination - otherwise - never mind the tabloids - my wife would have something to say.

Sunset, Lettuce and Diabolical.

I like the idea of 'rooms'... compartments.
Your words impress upon the reader an interesting series of feelings and thoughts!

Especially liked:

'bent from lack of sun'
'Tulip tourettes - and everything comes undone'

Thanks for comments :-)

Isobel - the title is meant to be flippant in the sense of the number of snips to shape a new style and is also the number of syllables in each line of the verses :-)

Julian - what are you up to?!

Cynthia - you're not far out at all in your interpretation except the bit about growing an inch of grey being devastating. My hair grows too quickly and false colours are expensive :-)

This is a much shortened version of an older poem i wrote about my marriage break up of 8 years.x
