Lovely poem Pete and great to see you back posting.
I like the ideas in this as much as your choice of words. The idea that happiness is ephemeral pretty much sums it up for many. Put joy into a routine and great moments dissolve. No-one can take away memories though. Frozen they can bring comfort - a feeling of having lived, at least.
Would agree with Cate that this is a lovely gentle contrast to your rants.

Marvellous Ray !
do you remember the roses of eyam in the 70's ? - a TV play about the plague ? - both chilling & hilarious in turn. B

I really like this Pete - it's different and it's strange - and there's some marvellous turns of phrases & imagery in here - and a "real" story as well !
to me the only jarring note is that (for me) Venetian needs "blinds" added on [unless I'm missing something]. well done. B

Very different indeed Ray - almost mythical. Can hear this being read aloud by a big boomy-voiced bloke! Do you have a big boomy voice?
I like it, a lot. Am a sucker for a good story.

Great subject - very close to my heart.
This starts out, forgive me for this, but it starts out like the talks you used to get at the planetarium!
Are you a fan of Lovelock's theory of Gaia? This seems to come through a bit for me. I am, btw :) Be gone crystal healers, leave the theory alone!!
Entropy - love it. Ever read any Pynchon?
I like this - quite prosy or free verse, whatever, but I do like it

Thanks all - glad you enjoyed it. It calmed me to write it.
And Rachel - Spring IS here. We went for a walk on Sunday and all the trees were budding like crazy, Great Crested Grebes were courting, the daffs were all up and ready to flower, and you could smell it in the air. Proper buzz.

Howdy Cynthia :)
Aha - a fellow dreaming stair-jumper eh? Excellent :D I used to swim on top of the water in my dreams (prior to actually learning, obviously). And as well as jumping down stairs, I used to flic flac down them too - now THAT'S what I call a good dream :D One time I did it after being mostly eaten by piranhas - little bloody bits of me still in a body formation, flic flaccing down stairs heh.
I will look out for some Dr Seuss then - on your rec :)
Did you ever dig out that spooky bible numbers list?

Whimsy, nostalgia, humour, all wrapped up in one poignant package.
A wonderful poem Isobel which takes what could have been a horrifically self destructing incident and turned it into a thing of worth.
Well done you!

A beautiful poem Pete. Poignant with memories of a lost love, with some lines which linger in the memory like the half remembered haunting melody of a song forgotten.
So different from your performance rants, but I love the contemplative depth of this. Its good to see the other side of you.
Quality work!

Laura, I've been meaning to share this for ages. I can't even remember when it came up. I'm a stair-leaper too, always from great heights, barely touching a toe on successive landings, rather sorry for poor souls racing down; they can't bound whole floors like me. It's always a wonderful feeling, never anxious. I'm also an air-walker over bushes and fences, sheds - that type of thing. My feet get to them and I naturally rise up and walk a few inches over the top, as butterflies do. I'm waiting for the dream when I walk 'through' things! That'll be interesting. We can dream only what our subconscious will allow. If I dream something like that, I might be dead the next day!

Thanks, Steve, Greg, Ann.I like to throw something out like this once in a while, never very popular but that's not the point. It's based on Journal of a Plague Year by Daniel Defoe, which I think is a fine book.Giving things a go, yes, we may not get very high, but look at the width!

So good to read a poem about something so unexpected and different! I wonder why this subject popped into your head? "bluff, smoke and musketry" is a great line.
Comment is about His Works (blog)
This really tells a story and casts a chill, with well-chosen language reflecting the times: "went in scout of some space to wait out / the distemper, in faith it would falter / come chill of December or for want / of flesh to assuage its hunger." The law of the jungle when the plague is at its height; the quick forgetfulness when it has abated. The music and rhythm of this poem reminds us of the ravages wrought by plague, and the grip of religion over the populace for so many centuries.

This made me smile. By co-incidence my son announced today that he was renouncing the faith he was baptised into and adopting something similar to buddhism...
I think he was worried I might be upset. I was relieved more than anything - when I look at your list of evils - there are worse things to happen to a teenager. I wonder what he will be telling me tomorrow...

This is great. I love the layout - it's almost like seeing scenes of the life described through gaps in a fence or window blinds. I certainly agree with Rachel - small town, white kids - I know it too.

Thanks for your thoughts on Work of Art, Dave. The structure is comprised of 3 lines of iambic heptameters (fourteeners) rhyming aaa with a final line of pentameter (give or take a caesura or two!), and rhyming b. The same rhyme then repeats throughout the other stanzas. Haven't a clue if it has a name but Kipling used 14-ers a fair bit. I used the same structure for Dipso, Fatso, Bingo Asbo Tesco - one at I did at the Tudor last December.

Thanks Laura and Banksy. No, I don't remember that TV programme and no I don't have a big boomy voice. I've a fairly weak Brummie twang until I get on stage when it becomes a much stronger and infinitely more annoying Brummie accent. I don't know why.
