Thanks for all these comments (and jokes)
In answer to your question Larisa how about
A groundhog walked into a bar and said "Same again"?
But that would ruin the beautiful iambic pentameter.
How about a haiku....(joku)

Girl walks into bar
Barman gimme a double
So he gave her one.

Not an original joke, I know but probably never as a haiku.

Welcome back! So glad to see you writing again. I love the thought that has gone into this. The faces we project to the world - a fascinating topic. We all wear them - and I would say that masks increase/decrease regionally also - though I appreciate your poem is taking a more personal view.

Thanks, Greg. If you were a dirty old man you'd be in the sauna with the Catalans.

Thanks, Laura. Glad you liked it. That cigarette has done summat to your face.

Thank you so much, Darren. Had to look up phonology.

Cynthia, you're too kind. Actually, several people told me to ditch or radically alter the first verse. But I was stubborn and I'm glad it's appreciated.

This is fabulous. The opening question is a real hook that just swallows the readers in, and then your following lines make them lick lips with sheer pleasure. In addition to the fine comments already here, the run-over from stanza to stanza gives the poem forward energy too. IMO, this is top class.

Hi, Ann. I truly meant to contact you yesterday, but I got caught up in my oldest grandson's sixteenth birthday preparations - it IS a milestone! I don't know exactly where you live in Cornwall. I was thinking of you especially just in case you were in the flood zone.

How do you get on 'voice' for reading?

Once again Ray a choice of language that appears deliberate with its smooth sounding phonology and that's before you get to the sentiment and meaning contained within each stanza. Good stuff, indeed.

A very thoughtful piece of writing Yolande. Your`re so right that we all wear masks and sometimes when we think we can see behind someone`s who is close to us, there is another one firmly in place and we are not seeing the truth.
It`s a very special person indeed that we reveal our inner self to!!

Wow. Hugely evocative - I could almost feel the heat in the air. I found that second verse/stanza/thing really sensual and erotic - as it is supposed to be really. Really like the story-like quality to it. Sad note to end on.

Really enjoyed this poem, Ray, and its Rabelaisian glow. I hope it doesn't mark me down as a dirty old man to say the lines I liked best were "How at night we poured /ourselves into each other / to the rhythm of crickets."

I think perhaps "still" at the start of the final line of verse 1, when read out, gives emphasis to the sense of stillness. It is a deeply sad poem but so very, well, yes, as Cynthia says, haunting. I also like the line "the march of long men".
