A really beautiful photo and a tender poem.
I followed in my mother's footsteps - smacked my kids till they knew who was boss, in the early days - there was never any need thereafter - and they don't resent me for it. I once went to a parenting class run by a rather religious lady (can't remember whether she was baptist or methodist). She used to wack her kids with a wooden spoon - it came as a shock to some of the other mothers! The gist of what she was saying was that children NEED boundaries - are lost without them. I guess we all have different way of putting those in place. A good bit of discipline wouldn't do the current society any harm though. ( she says jumping down from he soap box)

I enjoyed this, Rod, it reminds me a little of my "World Stood Still". I very much agree with Dave's comments on the media. Good one.

I think this is really lovely, Carole. I have a slight preference for the second version except that I would include the word "blissful" from the first.

This is lovely Carole - it's hard to choose between the two - I do like the blissful moment of the first though - that moment of drifting off to sleep IS blissful. I'm a bit of an insomniac too so can appreciate this. A lovely conclusion - it does make you wonder why we all fear death so - nothing harder than life sometimes.

That's all it takes sometimes isn't it? A fleeting glance of something other, something beautiful co-existing in all this vastness. Moments like that inspire you with hope or at least make you appreciate the wonder of it all.
Lovely take on the theme Cynthia. x

Haven't got a clue how to set up my own blog Carole. You aren't the first person to suggest I should write short stories though. I'm not sure if I could give much attention to a personal blog though - what I love about WOL is the community feel - the camaraderie, the banter, the feedback. Would that be diluted if I started posting elsewhere - I'm not sure. I'll have to do some research on where people blog and what they get out of it. Maybe that's something I'll think about in the New Year. Hope to see you around before then.

Well Gus - what can I say?
Oh how I adore your way of looking at the space theme - only you could do it! This is fun - and life affirming! We are all here for a reason - it's just a question of tapping into the reason that works for us. I think I over-think things sometimes. My next poem will be on rockets that boldly go...
Thanks for putting a smile on my face. x

Thank you for the comment Lynn. Its got some weak spots but it reminds me of the dreams that make us keep on searching.
I do agree with your political comments. I like the one about the news standing still. It happened again with the Royal Engagement.

Great work, Janet, really penetrating, insightful work. What a warmth shines through everything you write now; hands-on awareness, I think, with compassion.

A winner, Isobel, honest and just so true of us all. What an age! We never give up, do we, on pouring out LOVE regardless of manipulation? 'Give me a cuddle' turns us to jelly, the little monsters!

Haven't we all? Your honesty and power of connecting is just amazing. I think your beauty is the stuff of artists' dreams; it was in this photo and still is. I believe artists would recognize the inherent imagination pouring out of you and would want to try to capture it.

An old photo - alas! And my darling daughter is fine! Just the thoughts a mother has when her offspring are getting on a bit! (But still lovely!) Just a memory of the only time I ever smacked her - and she STILL resents it! (Quite right too!)

Ah Isobel, I was wondering what point you were making too :-)
My mother brought me up believing I was born on a Monday. Later I discovered it was Thursday which defies the original saying in terms of actual travel but is true in other ways.
This would be a decent filler in a performance or read around with the right vocal intonations.x

It wasn't an important point - just a silly one - that I was a Friday's child not a Wednesday one (loving and giving as opposed to full of woe) I think most of us are though - we just cope with the woe as we go along the way :)
I'm sure I'll worry a whole lot more about the girls - something I'm not looking forward to!
