Wow. Hugely evocative - I could almost feel the heat in the air. I found that second verse/stanza/thing really sensual and erotic - as it is supposed to be really. Really like the story-like quality to it. Sad note to end on.

The more I read this the more I find myself relaxing. It has a 'meditational' feel and quality about it. :^)

Really enjoyed this poem, Ray, and its Rabelaisian glow. I hope it doesn't mark me down as a dirty old man to say the lines I liked best were "How at night we poured /ourselves into each other / to the rhythm of crickets."

Hey! I just spotted this cos I was reading your latest poem, I wasn't on WOL when this one appeared. I think it's utterly fab! And I agree it would be great as a performance piece too. x

Thanks for commenting on my space poem. If I added another line it would have to begin with the letter S or D. Otherwise my capital letters at the beginning of each wouldn't spell 'space' :-)
Get it? xx

Laura - if I added a sixth line it would have to begin with either the letter S or the letter D to keep within the theme. Can you see why now? :-)

I think perhaps "still" at the start of the final line of verse 1, when read out, gives emphasis to the sense of stillness. It is a deeply sad poem but so very, well, yes, as Cynthia says, haunting. I also like the line "the march of long men".

I like this a lot Yolande. Masks are intriguing. The idea of progression through the day works well. The repetition of 'trust' in the last 3 verses stands out too. Key isn't it. I guess we'll have WOL masks and open mic masks and goodness knows what

Thinking about what you might be saying here - is mankind trying to unify through the net but, as in god's response to the Tower of Babel, because it is questionable as to the purpose or wisdom behind it, is doomed to failure? Very loaded title I felt.

Yes, Dave, you are right it was a long shot but hey why not? It was simply the caverns reference that had me thinking of the Kubla Khan caverns!! Glad you lked the "On the nature of.." Wondered if it was a bit too much on the gloomy side but then I do love a good wallow! Is your similarish poem on your blog? I'll check it out now - I hope it is. Thanks for your support.

Um, actually this wasn't about WOL or WOLites at all but according to reception theory in which I've now been instructed (thank you) it's what people receive that matters.
The fact that it was written about the World Wide Web is neither here nor there.

Banksy's comments are getting more and more enigmatic. How did Michael Palin aka Pilate get in here?

A blind man unknowingly wanders into a dyke's bar, settles down with his beer & shouts out
"anyone wanna hear a blonde joke?"
Sure mister, says one, but, before you do, you'd better know that the blonde to your left is a wrestler, the blonde to your right is a construction worker and the blonde who just served you also works on the dock... now, do you wanna tell us that joke ?
Nah, he says.
Oh? and why ever not then ?
Cos I don't want to explain it three times. :)

one little thing which i maybe wrong is on the last line of the first stanza 'Still it is voiceless', you may want to reconsider 'it is still voiceless' but it is stirring stuff either way..
