Thank you all! A real buzz to have POTW for a real passion in my life, music and of course The Clash, thanks all for your good wishes, so glad you like the poem, much appreciated!!!

Cheers Martin hope you're good; thanks Kevin, glad you got to see the Clash, every gig was special (I was lucky to see them 6 times, plus Joe & The Mescaleros 3 times); thanks Jon, thanks Julian, still enjoying it at the socialist club!; thanks Trevor, and thanks Laura, I remember it well, you've done great since! - it's great to run events and give folk a chance as well as perform.

Keep writing and performing folks, as Strummer said without people we're nothing, we always need poets too Jeff X

I do so love your poems- so still and thoughtful - they have a wonderful calming influence - they wash over the reader and leave a sense of well being. i read them several times for the calm that they bring.

Thank you

Ah! One of them is my nom de guerre and the other is mine for legal purposes. That, or I got confused when I initially set up this account, some years ago now - I seem to recall it asking if I wanted a username and the resultant confusion arose somewhere along the way. Not that this clears up the fundamental riddle, of course: why 'Richie Muster'? That, of course, is a different question.

JC - it amazes me that his name has never been known to me, having a wide-ranging taste in music, but now that I've heard some
of his song performances (YouTube) I will be checking his available
CDs. I can see why his guitar and singing would get you writing
your appreciation on WOL. His voice is (to me) a mix of Dean
Martin and Pat Boone with the best of both...and ideal for the sort
of material he chose to sing. Thanks for the pointer in his direction -
although perhaps a case of "better late than never". At least he
was well known enough to appear on prominent US talk shows -
itself a measure of fame in the often ephemeral entertainment business. Cheers!

I like the tram lines (see what I did there?).

I'm too young to remember British trams apart from those on Blackpool promenade...my era is trolley buses in West London. But in recent years I have visited Amsterdam a lot and love the sound of trams on the tracks and the warning bells.

Anyway, I really like the piece Ray and will definitely read it again in the morning whilst not under the influence of drink and my wife not hovering nearby with her rolling pin. She wouldn't dare challenge me when sober! Anyway, got to go now as she is pestering me for sex, the minx!

Fabulous Ray. The trams you talk about a great deal different to the trams of today. The trams from that period had what you describe as a ' metal sigh' There is something totally unique about that sound which sticks in the memory.
It also smacks of a time when almost every other house might have had that prized aspidistra .
The line about Uncle Fred found dead in somebody else's bed puts me in mind of a line in an Ian Dury song
'coming home and finding somebody else's kippers in the grill'
sorry I am rambling now. I will stop
suffice to say, brilliant poem mate
nice one

I'm with you there, d. I don't hold with this current addiction to credit either. Sure, it's a direct hit to the pleasure centre in our brain but you'd think we could act a little more maturely occasionally. We're like those 4yo kids who are offered 2 sweets in 10mins if they can refrain from eating one now. Tragic or pathetic?
Anyway, rant over. I liked your poem. Straightforward and forthright.

A really good poem, Marina. I can only imagine - very poorly, at that - how it must feel to be thought an 'intruder'. Here we are, on a planet overflowing with human beings and somehow we still contrive to seek difference and division anywhere we look. You describe succinctly, in a forthright way both the frustration of being an outsider and your pride in your identity. I look forward to reading more by you.

'Where will the memories lie
of the child, of the youth
and the wise old man'
- that's a very interesting question you ask there, Desmond. It's one all poets ought to address in these febrile times too: if poetry - indeed, all art - has any pretensions to longevity i.e. passing on messages to successive generations (and I like to think this should be as important as speaking to the present moment - poetry isn't chip-wrappings) what will be the fate of all of humanity's creative output if there's going to be no tomorrow in which to appreciate it? A sobering, nay, terrifying thought.

Desmond,

The word apocalyptic comes to mind as the world shirks from its greatest challenge. Your poem poses some very deep questions. We focus on the unimportant when all about us we ignore the apparent.
