Thanks for reading Adam, this social media comparison is something that can affect everyone ,I think whether you're young or old, but when people get jealous about someone's perfect life, they forget how staged the images can sometimes be. Digital Detoxing can be good, cut back then come back refreshed!

My rationale for saying that we and not the politicians have caused this mess is this. (And when I say “we”, I mean half of “we”). If Remain had won the referendum there absolutely no question that we would not be where we are.
And no-one knew what “Leave” meant. And they still don’t now.

This poem about the enemy interests me as most wartime poets focus on their own side, their hardships and casualties or the injustice of war itself. As someone who fought during this conflict what motivates you to turn your attention to the enemy? Is there perhaps a degree of admiration for his skills or devotion to the cause? During the Vietnam war I was in the British Army serving in Germany contending with the Cold War but also living with a defeated people after the end of the Third Reich. In those days I did not write poetry but often wonder what angle I would have taken.
I like this poem and your style. It brings alive one of the worst post World War Two Conflicts.

I used the internet to buy a used manual portable typewriter plus
extra ribbons as a stand-by for when my venerable Amstrad fails me.
The little manual machine is an example of German engineering
that stands the test of time and I enjoy it for its reassuring presence
in case of need - a bargain for less than £40 when a mail order
concern that shall be nameless now advertises such a machine as
a viable alternative to electronic stuff at a price that exceeds £200 - I

I have recently had to cut way back on social media. I think the same things that adolescents are susceptible too, so are old men such as myself. Somehow I got sucked onto caring too much about others presentations of themselves and my own in a way that I never did before all this stuff. Great reminder.

Having come to the cyberworld late in life I bought a number of guides to help me adapt of its various demands. I recall that it was
mentioned that emails received should be acknowledged promptly -and in any event, within 48 hours. I have always endeavoured to
follow this instruction/advice and don't think much of those either ignorant or unaware of what is, basically, common courtesy
in matters of contact/communication. Even if a FULL reply is not
possible, a brief acknowledgement is surely within the capability of
most of us, fit and not-so-fit. Who likes - or deserves - to be left
"hanging"...unsure of the receipt of a message in this world with its electronic failures and an increasing inability among many to actually use a pen to write a letter!

I remember seeing a political cartoon some years ago, probably in Private Eye, where two aliens are being presented to John Major. The alien is saying "no, we meant a proper leader".

I so enjoyed this poem that I felt tempted to continue it. As a final stanza we could invite the aliens into the House of Commons to show us how to govern ourselves and learn good manners. Perhaps a course in Poltical Science would not go amiss.

I liked the way you wrote from the viewpoint of talking to death as another entity. It very much reminded me of Rumi. Also, the acknowledgement that death is the ultimate but doing the best you can to live a life in the meantime. Very moving.

In response to John's response to my comment... Ach I dunno. It's still tempting to blame David Cameron's ego and arrogance for starting this whole Brexit mess off. But I guess you're right, parliament is divided because we are... But then, true democracy can only exist if people are educated enough to be able to think for themselves, able to see through fake news and all forms of media manipulation. And I don't see any government racing to provide that level of education to everyone.. What's that Charlie Brown cartoon: "no one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them . "
