We can be very influenced by events and atmospheres.
A thought provoking poem that I enjoyed.

Thanks for your like Stephen and Graham, appreciated. I thought this would be a welcome change from the current trend for poetry in the more sombre vein (understandable of course). Sadly, entering into the spirit of that tends for me to be depressing, as poems never provide a practical answer, though no doubt that's what we'd all like. TV comedy can help if that works, but mental anguish should be guarded against in my opinion if at all possible.
I'll get my coat -- again.

Rogue actions by individual officers must always be held to account,
but not by mobs on the street or by individuals who attack when
inflamed by media reports. I don't recall "protests" on London streets
when Pc Keith Blakelock and young serviceman Lee Rigby were
mercilessly hacked to death. Would those offering platitudes and
excuses for such behaviour following the death of George Floyd
have been eager to condone it here in London in the two instances I. have mentioned? Somehow, I think not.

embrace them, especially in times of perceived threat.

Maybe some misplaced "guilt" here...but wonderfully told in the
context of this childhood recollection. All kids are mercenary
opportunistic little creatures and are heedless of motives or morality
in the need for friendship or realising personal satisfaction - e..g.
the chance to feast on the delights of comic books owned by another.
I remember how these skilfully illustrated publications opened up the
imagination to things beyond childish abilities and let it fly! The art
has obtained its deserved reward in the welter of "hero" films now
enjoying a bonanza at the box office across the globe.

It's the old "Golden Rule"
Do unto others...
the bad part is...
those who burn and destroy businesses
are in fact destroying the lives of those
who built them, sometimes taking years,
their life-savings.

Well said Ian. And excellent rhyming.
Your statement below is so true:
'I detest censorship and usually don't care - I'm either growing soft in my old age or am conscious not to offend the very people I'm trying to support. Who said this poetry lark was easy?
As Po says
The time to worry is when I say nothing....
We must tell it how we see it....

Hi MC, can remember still the Brixton riots and Notting hill events - seething with undercurrents and laments - you put your statistics well. There is always an uncertain aura about these occasions, and when rioters approach with gnashing teeth it's then you feel their saliva hit the back of your neck before the cs gas arrives and leaves everybody gasping for breath with stinging eyes - then the cavalry is called in, and mayhem erupts amongst the populace. No win, win, situations for any one of them. It is a sadness shared. P

It's true, Ian, that we normally wouldn't want to see that word spelt out on Write Out Loud. I remember the outrage among colleagues of colour when we carried a story in the paper that included the word, because it was a story about someone using that same word. I think one or two black American poets have used it on this site. There's no easy answer, but when you are writing about deep-seated racial prejudice, maybe there is a time and a place for it, as long as you're making it clear which side of the great divide you are on.

The figures are a salutary reminder that law enforcement in the USA is a daily dalliance with duty and death. One officer had a citation for
saving a family in the wake of Hurricane Katrina while another saved
a woman from a burning house. How easy to slag them off in the
collective sense as happens when there's a "racial" element to promote. An added poignancy is the number of non-white officers among the victims.

The words burn with the heat of outrage and resentment. But - if
anything amounting to progress is to come in that great country -
there must always be a work in progress taking place. If not... . .
Where is the solution the wise would gladly find
When those of like mind heed only others of their kind?

It just happens to be the case that I'm white..
These lines contain a good guide for living.
Avoid preconceptions, treat others as you would wish to be treated
yourself and be ready to defend the rights of others, even if you
disagree with what they say or do - as long as these are open to
question and resolution without being at risk of being abused or discarded.altogether. Might is not always right.

I would be interested in your view Greg (or anyone reading this) - I originally didn't **** the obvious racial slur - I thought it was clear I was referencing others views not my own - then I had a change of heart and ****** it and now I'm thinking I shouldn't have. I detest censorship and usually don't care - I'm either growing soft in my old age or am conscious not to offend the very people I'm trying to support. Who said this poetry lark was easy? :-/

Powerful and angry, with absolute justification. Saw an interview with Spike Lee earlier today, in which he pointed out that the foundations of the US were genocide and slavery. So much for the land of the free.

M.C., I always thought 'penny wise, pound foolish' COULD mean 'those people who skimp on pennies constantly, might get hit emotionally and helplessly, by something they absolutely WANT, regardless of cost. Something other folk could consider silly or unnecessary, anything from art to the finest cut of meat for just one meal.' I agree, it's a toughy!

Stimulating word picture that provides images that resonate down
the years from school days long past. I recall the rumour of our PT
teacher (they always seem to be at the front of these supposed
romantic affairs) being involved with a certain female teacher at our
school. But it was never confirmed and soon our youthful curiosity
had moved on....like today's newspapers being discarded as tomorrow's wrapping for fish and chips. UK readers will know what

A trip down memory lane, not a word of a lie involved! R. Whites coincidently had their offices not two miles from the poem's setting, in Staines. Lyons Maid had the monopoly in cinemas, delivered by buxom ladies during the interval. Sigh of nostalgia.
