Once again Togher you hit the spot.As your poetry is suited to 'the page' the word 'stationary', in this context, is incorrect. Unless... it's a deliberate use?

Otherwise it's the other spelling 'stationery' - with an 'e'. I try to remember this by thinking that the 'e' represents 'envelopes'. Notwithstanding this minor infringement - I can already see this sitting inside another great collection.

Interesting. I can't say that I like it. A little bare and stark for my own personal taste. However, that does not mean that I do not appreciate it. From a totally subjective viewpoint it epitomises the frustration and insecurities that a peron has when trying to write about themselves. For some reason we are lost for words and for some insane reason we feel that we have to get it just right. For the fear of not being liked. I can associate with that. So maybe I do like it after all.

Hi Nicky, thanks again for your lovely comments.
I enjoy the fact that you read and see something differently to some others although their comments are no less valued. :-)

I went to see a medium once who told me there was two children for me. Then he saw my face and said ''but that can be avoided.'' :-)
At the end of the day whatever we say is only ever accurate at the moment of the reading. People make their own choices when the given scenarios come about. It's often only then it is realized that the medium was right and the reading valid. It's the outcome which matters and is often blamed on the medium when it isn't what the recipient expected by way of interpretation. Any medium can only interpret an image as they see it. Pretty much like interpreting a poem one doesn't understand or relate to in any way shape or form. Sometimes it takes a little discussion between the medium and sitter to get it absolutely spot on just as a discussion between poet and reader creates a clearer understanding of a poem.
Occasionally a medium is naturally intuitive and intuitives just know. They don't need to be told anything to know they are making a connection with the sitter and can even produce astounding messages when answering a question asked by the sitter.
Hope this explains it a little but i can't explain any more about it here because it is a poetry site so if you wish to chat more about it you can email me any time. I promise i won't try to foretell your future. :-)

Hi Neil, I was in the Brit Army for 22yrs and then worked in International Aid for ten years, so I worked in a lot of conflict/post conflict and disaster striken area's, so that is where quite a lot of the stuff I write comes from.
Cheers Mate.

Really good, Emily. I always look for your work. You never disappoint.
One small (very small) suggestion: I would leave out the tag end 'you see'. It lengthens the line by two syllables, and the idea itself is totally understood in the concept of 'signs'. I think it jerks your flow unnecessarily. But that's me.

All assumptions are not wrong; that's the great thing about reading poetry.
If the poem works for you (the reader) based on an assumption and you enjoy the poem, that's great. I don't think authorial intent is the most important element of reading poetry; it can spoil it if anything.

Comments crossed John, thanks for your reply but i won't remove my comment. It's a common theme on here to believe what the poet writes is based on someone known to them. Yours demonstrates nicely how wrong we can be when we make assumptions.

Ah Isobel but i happen to know John is a very happy man in his marriage. Realism is a necessary part of a happy relationship. Personally i think that last line says that there's so much more could be said and the sadness smudges on the blank page are that which is within and cannot be portrayed on a piece of paper. Whatever is said/written here could be assessed as being either too much or not enough. Whether it is about his wife or not, it is an eloquent write delivering something very personal in a semi detached manner. Not an easy thing to do in anyone's book. (book of life or love).
I'm with Spencer, this would be a fantastic piece to enter into a book. A book about life or a series of poems on the theme of relationships and/or marriage. Wonderful.

Nice one Isobel, I have been saying similar to you for a while - although some of the POMs are great they're often by people who have posted nothing for ages!

In my opinion POM should be POM not a poem from months ago. The next months poem is then selected by the winner obviously who in a lot of cases (not all) won't be arsed about what has been going on recently on WOL.

Count me in, whoever wins I will sleep better knowing that POM is one from the last month from an active member Jeff X

I enjoyed the sheer honesty which shines through from the author of this write. It shows a deep thinker with a steady note of realism. Some great points made in a subject which is often argued about depending on ones faith in the world and humanity.
I too see an element of fun in this write.

Now Janet - that is a bit of a risky question to ask... Were I his wife, I'm not sure I would like to be described as the 'sadness in a smudge on a blank page' - but perhaps John is aiming for a bit of realism... I like the mood you set with this poem. I've heard you perform it but think it is better on page where you can appreciate the words more.

Thankyou all for your comments and thoughts about this.
There are many 'elements' to this piece. It was written while listening to a cd called 'Water Whispers.' and the writing ebbed and flowed like water does.

Nicky- i love your interpretation and not just because it is a positive comment.

Dave- i think Nicky could easily write a poem from her comment too.

Cynthia- thankyou and to be honest, i cannot understand what you mean when you say the first line doesn't balance with the sincerity and general tone. I've thought long and hard about changing that line and the only solution would be to write ' she cries a river of tears.'
I'm not sure if it actually makes any difference to the poem and either way it might be a cliched line but to change it would alter the whole theme. While i'm not averse to editing when it feels right to me, on this occasion i must stand by my inner feelings.
My 'intentions' are ALWAYS sincere. Perhaps my inexperience with writing shows through at times my intentions are misconstrued. I'm always happy to explain to anyone when that happens but in poetry there is often an exaggerated flow of words for effect.

Graham- please read my comment to Cynthia and thankyou for your input.

Isobel- Haunting. I like that. :-)

Andy- you're a gem and always so complimentary, thankyou.

I have to comment on this again Janet.

Cynthia and Graham ( please take no offense this is only an observation ) I see what you are saying but I do not think that this takes anything away from the poem. We all are influenced and use popular culture within any form of writing and if it fits, it sticks, so to speak. If every writer gives me a pound for the amount of times a line or a phrase that has been previously wriitten has spontaneously crept or sneakily leapt out of our mass of dull grey matter into the content of our written word, ( sometimes without us even realising it ), I think I would be so rich that I could twitter on all day without a care in the world. Do we need to start putting inverted commas around phrases that may have been written by someone else and bibliographies at the end of a poem. Think this is a cause for discussion.

I loved the poem Janet, and every time I read it I see something more. Very good write.
