I love the way you bring that superstitious element in. The feeling that if we are thinking of someone we love, they will just . . .KNOW!

I love how you've parodied some cliches but in an inventive and new way that evokes the truth behind the cliche' that we do think of our loved ones - and we hope they think of us too.

Hi Ann - no problems personally with just writing poems that are descriptive than meanings.. A good poem that is descriptive to me does have a meaning, be it different of course.
Either way, I enjoyed this.. I like the fact it is almost a snapshot or a photograph.. top stuff! x

Hi Winston, my thanks for commenting on 'Tribute for John' - as Ray Connolly observed in his 'Unimaginable' John was the most articulate rock star we have yet seen - difficult to do the guy justice. Best wishes, Dave

Hi Greg as ever thanks for your perceptive comment. This was one where I didn't really know if others would 'get' what was going on. I thought it might be a bit too abstract. I've been really busy for a while now (earning a living!) and I thought I had better bung something on. It's been a while since I logged on. I'll try to catch up with any of your own recent offerings, too.

Hello Ann. RE your comments about your work losing the element of fun as it gets better.
I suppose most of my humour could fall into the "wry" genre as I have always seemed to have been a good observer of life.
My problem with humorous poetry is that it all tends to sound too Pam Ayres or Roger McGough. Both of these are good poets in their own field but it is a very small field.
I suppose humour tinged with subtle irony, pathos, etc strikes a much stronger chord with me.
I still think you publish too early and need to sleep on the words. I can almost guarantee that you will review something. I always do.
Don't waste words either. I always think (unless a piece is sparsely pared) that every word should contribute something.
I try never to say eg. he looked, when there are a 101 ways to describe a look.
Anyway my tenpennyworth over. Graham.

Hi Greg, and thanks for your sensible comment on Vortexing. (Maybe I should write a follow up called Artexing!) I think since my Arvon course I've been working harder at my stuff and have more of an idea as to developing and improving. And I've had some really nice comments, making me hope I am on the right track. The only thing is, my poems seem to all be getting a bit low key, down beat, depressing, lacking in the life that they used to have. Getting too serious in fact. Do you think that this happens when you try to become a "better" poet? I don't want to lose all the fun! Boo Hoo! I'm going to leave this comment on Graham Sherwoods profile too, as I've found his feedback very valuable as well. And yes, I am very lucky living where I do! xx

You've got some great observations here, Ann. I envy you for where you live, how you can just go out each day and see so much. But if it was me, maybe I would put these away in a metaphorical cupboard for a while, get them out again in a month or so, shake them up and see how the dust settles on them. You might want to condense and add more. I think that ideally a poem should convey a mood, rather than a message, and take you on a journey that leads to some conclusion. Invariably mine don't pass that test.

Enjoyed this, Dave. One of my greatest heroes. The whole Lennon industry is beginning to crank up again with the 30th anniversary approaching, isn't it? I'm reading his biography on the train into work at the moment, and trying to work on some sort of poem myself. Interesting that he dropped his middle name for Ono but revived it as a nickname for the Rock and Roll album. Dr Winston O'Boogie. I liked that.

I'll add to what everyone else has said. Have a couple of poems to finish, then I'll have a go. Right now the only freedom I would like is from the chore of housework - or the guilt of not doing it. Perhaps I should write about that... x

I love the use of nature in here Dave - you show some impressive horticultural knowledge! The 7 deadly sins is a biggie to tackle - you don't shrink from much, do you?
You don't get over the fact that a bit of sin can be very appealing sometimes though. Perhaps that's the subject matter for another poem...

Hi Ann
Not sure whether to respond here or on your profile, but for the sake of continuity, here.
Andy's choice of 'Freedom' should work well, because it is not too constricting and imagination can run away with it. It's possible that the 7 Deadly Sins - exciting a topic as that could be (imagine eye-winking emoticon) - would be too specific. But if you want to, there's nothing stopping you, particularly if whoever wins Andy's comp doesn't want to run one themselves.
If you do it, can I put down a marker that this will be re-blogged!

I'm not sure who exactly this poem is aimed at but there's a bit of all of us in this piece. In an introspective mood we'd recognize the ego within ourselves, in a foul mood we would lash out labeling others as the oppressors - ignoring the oppression within.
