Thanks for the kind comments. Mick Lynch is someone who often comes across as a breath of fresh air among so many hopeless politicians. He's not afraid to speak truth, even if it means he will get stick for it.

Thanks Mark for that swathe of nostalgia - so much of it within my own memories. I was sold a Phillips Jaguar - their best model for 10/- after the Lenton went ! I took that around North Wales with my brother in the sixties. He was a bastard on the hills with his Falcon. I didn't follow the racing really although several friends had enviable bikes, like ASGillott and Rotrax. They felt so light. I have a Roberts now with a 531ST frame good as gold on the roads. Sounds like we are the same age.
I'll get my coat.

Certainly, the aspect of the safety of any residents has to be
taken into account and that should be a primary governmental responsibility, with associated attention from local authority
supervision over what is placed within their jurisdiction for human
habitation.

I enjoyed this tonsorial travel down memory lane. My childhood still has its recall of first visiting a barber in my
Devon seaside hometown. It lay at the rear of a shop premises
and its row of red leather chairs that could be moved up and
down by a foot lever were a source of fascination to my pre-
teen mind.
I can't recall the last time I visited a barber shop. It was in
Edgware Road W.2. - that I do remember. Now, after a career
that required a certain length of hair, I'm content to let it grow
and occasionally wield a pair of sharp scissors before my bathroom mirror when it gets a bit too long down the neck.
I've become quite skilful at that aspect of cash-saving self-care in my dotage.

It does seem to me that the current/recent crop of Tories in
government have gone off message regarding their original
position as the old conservative (with a small "c") political
party. But HM's Opposition doesn't appear much different.
In short, they both appear inclined to pay far more attention
elsewhere than to the concerns of the electorate here in these
put-upon over-populated financially-stretched islands. They
are both a pretty poor lot. Something radical is required to get
domestic UK politics back on track.

For the Tories to have been in power for thirteen years a good proportion of the professionals you list Uilliam will have voted Tory and undoubtedly some will be card carrying members of the Party. Something to think about eh?

If there are statutory H&S regulations then clearly these must be adhered to. So if guests are being moved into the facility in breach of regulations I would expect the H&S Executive to be taking some action. Are they?
Racism Uilliam...do you mean racism between guests of different races? What can the authorities do about it other to react if there is a formal complaint?

MC, you ask “What is the big problem with the facilities on offer for these incomers?”
One problem is safety; remember Grenfell? the other is racism, both related.
Who’s advice would you rather take?
A. That of your average bitter sodden pub racist boor, who read something in a 30p rag?
B. Or that which is imbued with the technological and psychological (ie. knowledge of crowd behaviour etc.) expertise of professionals gleaned over almost 120 years; which is that of the Fire Brigades Union?

Music...poetry? same difference.
I find them in the dawn chorus, in the human voice...in a woman's Scowse or Geordie accent, or in the tones of someone speaking Chinese...in the sound of the immigrant mother and daughter on the number nine bus speaking Italian....
I refuse the enslavement of "mobile" contraptions and "earbuds", music's all around me.

When i was a young man I spent my life in accommodation provided by government that, looking back, appears far less
comprehensive (see "basic" for the gist of my meaning!) than
that provided on this Dorset hostel put in place for migrants.
Our armed forces are housed in accommodation very similar to that recalled by me from half a century ago. I was grateful for
what was there and had no problem with any of it. So what is the big problem with the facilities on offer for these incomers?
Sounds like a storm in a tea-cup to me, brewed up by
career-whingers who are their self-appointed garrulous "guardians".

Thank you Stephen and MC. I took the opportunity to google those early characters (which I ought to have done rather than relying on my memory) and found a couple of characters I could have covered in the poem - Florrie Lindley and Leonard Swindley.

As someone aware of the soaps but never a fan as such, I can
appreciate this poem as a clever precis "portrait" of a television
institution in that particular genre. Even now, well-known names
are keen to get a part in its never-ending story. I would just be
happy to be the composer of its signature tune...the gift that keeps on giving. I have a feeling JC that you might agree.

It seems that music has been a feature of human celebration in
civilised lands for millennia. Weddings have even attracted the
attention of classical composers like Grieg and Mendelsohhn. Music is a primary companion to the expression of emotion...and
we are all richer for it.

Simpler plots for simpler times, Greg. I regret the incoming of Eastenders and Emmerdale which started a race to the bottom. Murders, drugs, sexual mores, they seemed compelled to compete and outdo each other.
You may have noticed my “deliberate” mistake. Having googled I find it was Harry and not Bob Hewitt. Bob was a South African tennis player of the ‘60’s.

Probably owed something to 'kitchen-sink realism' of British movies in the early 60s, as did Z Cars. I watched it in the late 70s, the first time I lived up north, and I remember it as being full of humour, as was the Daily Mirror's Manchester edition. The arrival of EastEnders precipitated more arguments on Corrie, as I recall, but by then I'd stopped watching, having moved back down south.
