The recitation seems some way removed from
public incitement to disaffection and hatred,
even less when any wider distribution via
Youtube was NOT the action of its author.
How tragic that a country can be ruled and the
law enforced by those so fearful of poetry spoken
in private.
These same souls would no doubt insist on being
thought civilised and treated as such by more
advanced nations. They should be ashamed.

Hi Laura, 'Beano' many thanks for the kind words. I never actually met Ian Drury but if he is the one I think you mean well rather a sad ending. BTW, I haven't been to Thanet either. That was just a name that came to me. Just been checking out some of your poetry links, gosh impressive. Glad you are still posting. x

Congratulations Harry! I'm happy for mine to go to the Philippines disaster fund, Dave - and it's very kind of you to organise.
This comp might not have had a large number of entries, but I have enjoyed reading each and every one of them. I've also thoroughly enjoyed performing mine.
Cate (who is a bit behind the times) has just finished hers!

It's not the greatest poem by any means, but just wanted to capture that bittersweet end-of-festival summer feeling. Now to get through the sodding winter...

HRH was down the road today
Getting on the royal train
From Heaton Chapel Station.
I meant to pop down and have a word
Or even a whole poem
But I forgot and had instead
A cup of tea and small slice of
Royal Battenburg.

Thanks for the link – that poem has a reference to the Beatles also. My education continues. As for the expression "Bag of Cats", I liked it enough to write a 'poem' about it.

Heartfelt and the more powerful for the reality
behind the words. Your Uncle Percy would be
proud of your poem.
My father survived WW1 as a young subaltern,
then the Anglo-Irish War of 1918-1922, only to
find himself in uniform for WW2. It beggars
belief what his generation endured and I wonder
occasionally what he would have thought about
those who complain so readily these days?
Oh - two small queries.
Verse 5 - shouldn't "came" be "come"?
Verse 6 - wouldn't "But" be more logical in
context in line 2? - otherwise the meaning
seems confusing.
Cheers.

"Life can seem crappy
When you're not very happy;
But spare that resentment
And aim for contentment!
Remember - like sin
It comes from within
Be thoughtful and kind
And you'll win peace of mind -
and contentment!"
Oh - in the first line of the 4th verse: is "quite" meant to be "quiet"?
Best wishes.

Hi Starfish Thanks for the kind comments on Annus MIrabilis. Glad you spoted the Larkin connection. I did it on purpose. Both poems are about 1963 and start of with a Beatles reference and 'problems' with girls. Paul Farley has also done a gone one about that year, but he focuses on the death of Sylvia PLath. If you want o try to find it, it's called 1th February, 1963 and is a collection Called THe Ice Age.

I had no idea there was a comp! Have to agree with you and Cate about extending it... The more people involved the merrier! And Cate, last time (not Isobel's comp) I was half way through writing mine too and it was over before I could finish, so I never did.

Very vivid description of Wigan's King Street this Ian!
I enjoyed reading this but wasn't sure if 'urinates' is as appropriate as all the other language? 'Alleyway' and 'gutter' aren't too far away in the layout - surely it can tolerate a 'piss'!?
