This poem captures a sense of wistfulness and the complex emotions that arise from longing for something elusive or lost. It invites the reader to contemplate the transient nature of human experiences and the beauty found within moments of sadness and yearning. https://tunnelrush3.com

Thanks for the compliment Stephen. Probably if we spent time over there it would all come roaring back - the Americans seem to live on a dream - or will soon be a nightmare?
An imaginative response thank you David. I'm glad you liked it and embraced my noir version of the phenomenon. There;s really no escape from the American good guys and bad guys syndrome except to nail it down.....

Hi John,
I absolutely see your direction there John and it is conveyed with clarity.
I was interested in how your words triggered my prejudiced/influenced thinking by use of specific words and images with which Britons are often bombarded. In that respect non-brits might not be so distracted.
I am fascinated by interpretations and how they can be wildly varied, your poem offered a really good example of such a vehicle for interpretation.
I would say that the thrust of your poem is clear and that it stands well without any convoluted interpretation such as mine...(for which I apologise)
David

Hi John,
I thought I'd chip in.
I appreciate the way this seemingly obvious poem highlights the juxtopose between the many differing types of people who find themselves homeless or in addiction. The use of the image of "The Poppie" pointing toward a possible prejudice long implanted in a nations psyche. The truth is, most who find themselves streetside are there due to some kind of trauma and pain (I highlight the use of the word most) as there are those who choose.
I do understand this piece is as much about addiction as homelessness, the image you have used to accompany the poem will possibly colour reactions and comments.
Your wordage is spot on, those veterans and others who fall between the cracks do often seek oblivion and nothing other than that (this I truly know) The other truth is they are not alone in their homelessness and seeking of oblivion by various poisons. Literally, the entire globe is represented on our streets today.
Many of those homeless vets fought in a conflict which encompassed a convenient regional poppy war with international influence and repercussions upon their own futures, ironic eh.
A poem probably a little more complex than it seems on first reading.
David.

Just popping back in to compliment the reading of your poem. I rarely revisit to comment other than to prattle on about something triggered by what was written.
In this case I simply want to compliment you for creating some genuine poetic noises and imagery, refreshing.

PS. I find it amusing that the repetition of the word "Digging" put me in mind of Seamus Heaneys' poem of the same name. Ironically another poem about a Patriach.

We see that vacuous world eating itself, so shallow now that it has resigned itself to digging up corpses and zombiefying them back into celluloid reality...(no celluloid now though) old stories recycled and bloated for effect.
Of course there are those who shy from the arc lights, but too few.
An insightful poem which begs the lid be firmly nailed down and sunk in the depths.
Meanwhile real people aspire to their fantasy. The world is upside down in tinseltown...

Thank you, MC. The purpose of this poem was to gently satirise the fact that Trump still claims he won the 2020 election, even though this is an obvious lie. Having just seen him say that there will be a 'bloodbath' if he doesn't win this time, I think the tone was much too gentle. I'll correct that next time.

So, it's all doom and gloom if Trump regains the presidency. But
I recall how he confronted the sabre-rattling North Korean dictator and forged an unlikely understanding where others
feared to tread. And then there was that memorablr moment
caught on film when upon shaking hands with Putin, Trump
playfully pulled him off his feet, like some rag doll, with a big
smile on his face. Strong men - including dictators - like to
know they're not alone and face their opposite numbers with
a certain degree of unspoken acknowledgement that can create
better things for the rest of us. Trump had no need for the
behind the scenes financial inducements that can corrupt
political campaigns in the hands of "career" politicians in the
political history of the USA. Go back to New York's Tammany Hall and move on via the crooked politicos of Chicago et al and Mafia/Giancana influences in the Kennedy campaign. Compared with that lot, and the Clinton (I did not have sex with that woman), incumbency, Trump may be no angel but his no-nonsense style found a responsive chord in a disillusioned
American electorate. And "Woke" he is not!
