The modern Conservative And Unionist Party certainly seems
occupied by the "wrong sort" - but then society in general has, IMHO, taken a turn for the worse and it can be no real surprise
when its public services are filled by the results!
As for the policy attributed to Thatcher - I seem to recall a certain
Michael Heseltine being sent to Liverpool on some sort of local
recovery/regeneration mission back in the distant past. Was that
doomed to failure - or was it never going to be enough?.

I'm so glad that I spotted your post here-thank you.
I will read your post later on "Bemoaning the state of the high street", and give it the attention it deserves.
Further, on Mental Health,
I CAN well believe that Luciana Berger said:
"It was staggering so few with mental health conditions were in work",
Oh yes: "WORK MAKES YOU FREE", now where have we heard THAT before? Get back to bloody work or else!
And I CAN believe that Berger..."is spending too much time attacking Jeremy Corbyn."
It would not surprise me if Berger joined the Nasty Party, and took to singing the the "Horst Wessel Lieb" at the Tory party conference.
The several year long campaign of slander and smears against Corbyn, carried out from within-and from without the Labour Party has been, and still, is based on a pack of lies.
The NHS and the Mental Health services are doomed if we do not address the enemy within the Labour Party.

That's why the Romans on Hadrian's wall kept geese as guards - to keep the hobgoblins away.

There's a theme developing this morning,
musk, rambling rose scents.
And in the moment's silence between notes
measured minds orientate themselves.
The silences - just as important as the notes.đ

â**HIS** WHOLE ARSE (and probably his scrotum..â
Funny you should mention thatâŚ..!
MUSK (Arabic): From the word muska, meaning âtesticleâ.
The deer gland was thought to resemble a scrotum.
Musk is a class of aromatic substances, including glandular secretions from a gland of the musk deer.
And about:
"the pissing rain (ha! 'wee/piss'.. get it??!? lol)"
I've often walked in the pissing rain whilst being pissed up,...thing is-
why does the rain never piss UP-
why is it always pissing DOWN?
Just asking like!

And pine for what is not;
Our sincerest laughter
With some pain is fraught;
Our sweetest songs are those that tell
Of saddest thought.

You express your self eminently clearly Uilleam. When we send our poems out into the world we lose control of what they might mean. Whether or not "âan old Welsh witch,â and âthis Abyssinian maidâ, are two separate people, or are they separate representations of a single type of woman, for example oppressed women?" is down to you, the reader. TS Eliot said that âA good poem, indeed, is one which even the most accomplished reading cannot exhaust." So the poem means what YOU take it to mean.

As a "leave" voter, being considered a numpty by a socialist (no
borders view?) is something I can live with. The basic reason
had to be the impertinent presumption that "here today, gone
tomorrow" inhabitants of the Mother of Parliaments thought
they had the right to put the primacy of that ancient institutiion
in the hands of others beyond these shores. without a mandate
from the people in pre-Brexit activities. Farage recognised
this - then and now. As for "gullibility", sadly, it can readily be
argued that it was the result of misplaced original trust.
Fool me once, shame on you - Fool me twice, shame on me.
Now, what about returning that hundred billion (late estimate)
allocated for the destructive Martini drining time London rail link to the nation's coffers to help the economy?

Thanks for your inquiry Rasa, and I hope you're soon feeling better.
I'm English, born in England, and English is my first language.
My family background is of a typical Lancastrian Irish Catholic community-and It's a long running project of mine to "teach myself Irish".
As someone who lives/works in Australia, you'll probably be famliar with the Anglicised name "Kelly".
Say my name with what I would describe as a "cod" Irish accent, and you'd be pretty close to the correct Irish Pronunciationđ!
Congratulations on your work in mental health, a badly neglected and "invisible" aspect of healthcare here in the UK.

A fascinating piece this, John. It was only your reference to Coleridge right at the end that allowed me to begin to cotton on a bit.
Are âan old Welsh witch,â and âthis Abyssinian maidâ, two separate people, or are they separate representations of a single type of woman, for example oppressed women? - Not sure if I've expressed my self clearly here!
Re witches: in the 16th century, Tangwlyst ferch Glyn was accused by the Bishop of St. Davidâs of living in sin. I believe the persecution of women like her was a result of psychological âprojectionâ, whereby the powerful felt threatened by own insecurities and âsinfulâ thoughts.
In France today, midwives are still known as "femmes sages" ie. "wise women": a name given to so-called witches in mediaeval times.
Given the derisory and disrespectful treatment of midwives and the nursing profession in general by the UK government, it would appear Gombeen Britons continue to live in mediaeval fear and ignorance of things they donât understand: i.e. Compassion and Service.

There are so many ways of seeing. Mood and interior thoughts and feelings influence how we perceive the external world. "Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty."

We watched Doctor Zhivago today, whilst my little grand daughter was in the room.
The last time I watched it was shortly after it premiered...a flood of memories and some tears prompted by the haunting Lara's theme came back; and I thought "When will they ever learn?", and I wondered what kind of a world are we leaving for our little one's generation?
