Hi Ann,
I think you've summed up the afterglow of the weekend well, one minute surrounded by like-minded (well some of them!) people, the next waiting on your own to leave. You were lucky to see some of Hebden Bridge, I saw the hostel and the Spar and there's no poem in that.

Thanks Ann, almost makes 24 hours there and 36 hours back worth it. If I shut my eyes I can still smell that bus ten years later.Mx

Just been reading your samples here. 'On Mondays I fall in love' and 'coming home without you' are superb. x

Rachel, this is amazing, raw and true. Started reading and found it rather 'unpoetic'? without a flow but then it had me and when it kicked in athe end... well ! stunned. Win x

Have to agree with the others - a lovely evocative poem that really works on the imagination to summon up all sorts of images.
Have you ever been to the Canal Museum at Ellesmere Port? A good visit

Hello David - yes, I've just posted to Greg that I enjoyed Treading Water too. I don't know if you know Selby but he's nailed the ambience and landscape spot-on.

Thanks for your thought on Tom Pudding. I thought it needed the help of the audio and picture so you Southern softies didn't think it was some kind of Yorkshire offal delicacy.

Hi Banksyperson - I didn't say I liked it madly (HB), tho it was OK. It was more about the weekend and my feelings I guess. Tho I will remember it fondly, cos of all the WOlies I met there! Why don't you come next time - but I guess you may have been there - incognito! (Maybe dressed as Valerie Singleton!) (Maybe you ARE Valerie Singleton! I always found her faintly annoying! Quite fancied Peter Purves tho. But my FAVE was - do you remember the french version of Robinson Crusoe? Ooooooh! Heaven. I can hear the sig tune now! What a dish! ;-)

Nah, Hebden's one of them places best seen in the rear-view mirror or fondly remembered many many years later :)
You'll be telling us you like Burnley next. XX

I really like this Mike, the romantic nature, the way so many details are remembered. And it's a real story too. I love the first hummingbirds of love hovering! And the idea of fate taking a hand in arranging a meeting that was meant to happen! xx

Thanks for your comments Josh, you are always so generous with them and they are much appreciated.
I haven't had chance to comment yet but I've been reading your new work with interest - they seem to be quite different from things you've posted before - a new self-assurance and maturity about them which is very appealing. Bit bogged down with stuff at then moment but I'll give them a proper read in the next couple of weeks.
Hope all is well with you?

Thanks for comments. Graham, I did not envisage a "you" character, I just asked. That's how I envisaged it anyway. Any meaning : the crystal stood for someone's soul. The seal was their solid body. The thunder storm was the mystery to me (as all three things were found/seen on the same day). Maybe a mental state?

And now to yours! I think your poems are getting really strong. Having read again the sestina I find it more and more impressive. I also really like Treading Water. The descriptive details are brilliantly controlled. I love the sickly air from the beet factory and the surprise of the abbey.

Hi Greg Your comments are greatly appreciated. I wasn't sure that these two would have much appeal to anyone else. The first one is very formal and the second one probably presumes a bit too much background knowledge about the weird conjuction of Islam and Ireland in my family background!

Hi Isobel;
easier answering you on here instead of the forum over editing.. the bit I told you about me giving one of the pieces to other vocalists in my band wordmusic is quite common for us lot as we swap it round a lot, and i have ended up reading other people's pieces before now... it is a great experience..
my new band (word music is on hold for a bit now)is operating on a similar level as it will be more moody and dark! lol x

Great poem Isobel. A wealth of thought and ideas in this.
The last verse is particularly haunting. The iniquity in which women live in some cultures should be commented on and not swept under the carpet. We as you say are the lucky ones who have a voice and can comment on our opinions, good or bad. We have the freedom to do so.

Winston - I quite like to see what people make of it before saying where it's from. That way, it makes me see more if it works.
Actually, this was all taken from graffiti in Richmond Castle Jail and from a transcript of a case put before the Tribunal in the 1st World War. I'd originally included some of my own words. I spotted a couple of bits where I'd actually still used my own words - they'll have to go.

Well the poor little devils still have that tough cheap izal stuff that scratches and rarely absorbs any moisture{thats when there`s any left!} Crafty teachers are not just allowed to use the left over roll to cut and paste and make straw dollies {and such like } anymore. So sayeth our powers that be. {In case they catch germy wormies!}

Hi Steven, Nice to see some of your poems on WOL. So... what to make of this one? Well, it seems a mixture of 3 elements 1) slang outbursts (perhapse from a squadie) 2) Religous references. And then the largest part 3) the rest... which seems to make gramatical sense if you switch word order a little and add a few short words for continuity (not for meaning) which seems to be an account from a conciencious objector. This 'analysis' is interesting as I am pondering if pieces like this and my last one (A-g I) are more interesting with some info about their origins (As I included). If I have deduced the origins of this one correctly then I tend to think that such background information is unecessary. If I haven't and what you offer illuminates BETTER than my efforts than I tend to think that the inclusion of such info is a good idea. RSVP. Win x. P.S. Wonder what Sean would make of THIS War Poem?

Why - what did you used to wipe YOUR arse on?
Joking apart - you are right. I am lucky. I tend to think that we often make our own luck though. A childhood like mine, where there were no silver spoons, prepares you for life better. You learn to do things for yourself - not to expect the world to fall around your feet. So many kids could do with learning that one.
