It occurs to me, Greg, that at every contact we have with the NHS, whether that’s a sniffle at the local GP’s or major heart surgery, we should be presented with an invoice; not to pay but to remind us of its value that we otherwise take for granted.

Too late? I fear that you're right, Steve. Up here in Northumberland the wind doth blow, mightily.

Forgive me for shedding a tear at your final stanza, JC. A beautiful, masterly poem, and a fine tribute to our embattled NHS.

Thanks for the recent likes on this.
I have a reading of this poem posted elsewhere which discusses some of its influences.
I am reluctant to post a link to it here as I am unsure how it might impact on my continued presence on this site.
Irrespective, thank you for the likes.

Thankyou, Graham and Stephen.
God and I have done a deal, Graham, whereby He won’t send for me until Spurs have won the Premier League. I got a bit fidgety back in October. And I think you’re right second time, Stephen.

Good as new, John! There's a lot more life in the old gate yet. Or is it the old git yet? 😄. Great poem. Keep well.

Top stuff, Steve. I enjoyed the poem but the song is brilliant, especially with that raggy accompaniment. Cracking use of repetition.

Absolutely right, Stephen. I've heard so many people say "Why should we do it if major polluters like China and the USA don't?"
Possibly the worst reason of all for not doing anything and the green light for everybody to do nothing.

Absolutely, Stephen.
I fear that action against climate change doesn't fit neatly into the electoral cycle, and as soon as "it's already too late" becomes the accepted narrative it'll fall off the agenda all together.

I did end up setting it to music and the rest of the band quite like it, so we might work on a proper arrangement at some point.
My take is here, if anyone's interested: https://youtu.be/ol4jJ0mvBVM
And the video that I watched that inspired it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1s5g5Ew5Cw
And yes, you're right, the lack of investment, lack of care, the normalisation of decline; sometimes you have to step back to see it.

Interesting how you have used wolves as the medium here. This appears to be a change in direction. An altogether offensive tack. A far more concise approach which I both like and am wary of.
Thank you for posting again.

@Uillem Yes, its so important. I wrote this poem at a time where my cup was so empty whilst still falling into people pleasing tendencies. Giving yourself no time to rejuvenate and fill your own cup is an act of violence against your inner peace.
I agree that in order to love others- you have to love yourself.
This can come with needing to accept disappointing and potentially letting others down, and learning that that's okay ❤

@Graham Thank you Graham, yes I love the simplicity of that, because if you are being the best you can in every situation, you know that you have done your best 😊
I love that it was on a school bus as well, the youth are faced with so many decisions and pressures that its an important reminder.

Some very profound words expressed here Robyn. I read a slogan on a school bus recently that said
‘Be the best you can’
I’ll settle for that

As for rote learning, I'm forever grateful for it; when the electric till broke down, the poor lass serving at the busy bar was pulling her hair out, she was lost !
I managed to save the day by doing a few quick sums with pen and paper.

My take on things is that it's less a question of either/or,
more that we need to truly love ourselves in order to love others?

My first cultural connection with the Danube was through my plonking away on the piano piece "An der schönen blauen Donau". Never did get the hang of it!
Nowadays I'm grateful for its performance during the New Year's Day concerts.
What a contrast; the beauty of Europe's cultural acheivements with the horrors which our home has witnessed.

Thanks Uillleam for pointing out that line, an outstanding example being the expenses scandal. What would Richi make of that now I wonder. The term "heart" is a condradiction in terms of course!
Oh Yes, Stephen so true. Many friends of mine were caught on the old breathalyzer when it first came in. I was stopped in the early hours by police and asked where I had just been. I said: " Buckingham Palace" - a long silence ensued. I followed it with "it was the staff dance., i'm a musician." "Oh right you are," one said non commitally....

Excellent news, John-I agreee with Greg.
The NHS saved my life at birth, in the year of its inception, then a second time, many years later, enabling me to keep a roof over my family’s head.
Shame on the “I’m all right Jacks” who denigrate it and it's ethical principles for ideological reasons.
