Unlucky Street

Phone shop
Vape shop
Chicken shop

It used to be so sweet
Now it’s Unlucky Street

High crime
Traffic fine
Sex attacks
And decline

It used to be so sweet
Now it’s Unlucky Street

Fly tipped
Dog shit
County lines
Conflict

High crime
Traffic fine
Sex attacks
And decline

It used to be so sweet
Now it’s Unlucky Street

Front garden sofas
Poverty sarcomas
Everyone you know does
A shrug of the shoulders

At fly tipped
Dog shit
County lines
Conflict

High crime
Traffic fine
Sex attacks
And decline

Tags in the litter
A mattress in the river
Stand and deliver
Throw up a pigeon’s dinner

On front garden sofas
Poverty sarcomas
Everyone you know does
A shrug of the shoulders

At fly tipped
Dog shit
County lines

Do us all a favour

Top stuff, Steve. I enjoyed the poem but the song is brilliant, especially with that raggy accompaniment. Cracking use of repetition.

Thanks Stephen!

I did end up setting it to music and the rest of the band quite like it, so we might work on a proper arrangement at some point.

My take is here, if anyone's interested: https://youtu.be/ol4jJ0mvBVM

And the video that I watched that inspired it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1s5g5Ew5Cw

And yes, you're right, the lack of investment, lack of care, the normalisation of decline; sometimes you have to step back to see it.

Terrific, Steve. An anthem of decline that no one seems to care about.
