Thanks David for your well sprung support.

I find it intriguing that the word "agenda" is used in this
accusative sense but moving on, it is eminently logical
that movement is to be linked with origins. The move by
the English towards what became the US Colonies was
impelled by their origins and the unsatisfactory/unhappy
circumstances surrounding the same. This can certainly
be linked with the movement of others around the globe
before and since.
As for the observation about "this government's
obsession with immigration", it would be more accurate to quantify this in relation to numbers not movement itself.
Every country has the right to determine who seeks to
make a home within its borders for a variety of reasons
which appear universal across the world throughout history. How safe and how secure can a house be when it throws open its doors to all and sundry. Common sense alone provides the answer. Let the movers write
of their experiences and let them be set alongside those
from separate more stationary sources for the enjoyment and information of us all.

Cheers, Julian. Yes, had it not been getting dark when I arrived at Sat teatime, a brisk walk up to Pule Hill would have been just the thing, after my five-hour drive from Winchester. Would have cleared the cobwebs, and been good for my knees. Ah, well. Next time, indeed.

I'm not sure which review your reading, but it's not the one I wrote. Apart from the phrase 'different feelings' I don't talk about 'difference' at all. As the subject of the book generally is expatriation, I expect it comes into the book; but if it's celebrating anything, it's celebrating movement not 'origins'.

Methinks you're reading your own agenda into the review.

Hey there, Ray and David,

..a little hair of the dog that bit, here, in a manner of speaking. This came almost ready-made in the middle of the night..not much forethought, but then I couldn't sleep and think maybe there's a reason for such ideas coming without premeditation.

Thanks, to the both of you.

loved this ian. im having to escort my housemate to the shop and back currently as he is terrified of clowns. frankly, if i see one of the pricks, i will knock shades out of him.

i feel your poem is slightly more eloquent.

sorry i couldnt come to pieland this time, i had completely forgot it was my daughters birthday that weekend (classy!)

edit - the poem itself is fab. i love the way you have linked the old noble tradition of clowning to the crass, modern affair we currently have using the old fashioned names and descriptions. clever.

tears of a clown indeed.

i very much enjoy haiku, they are how i started writing poetry and i have had several published in various publications. for me, and this is just a personal opinion, i prefer the ones that transcend mere description and become ethereal and worldly. so here, i would opt for two and three, as the final lines of both transport the piece to a place where i feel i am happy with the whole piece but i have to work to provide an image in my head overall. i have commented before on your work, and i think i said pretty much the same thing.

the very best book i own on the subject is basho's complete haiku. its every haiku the man ever wrote, in both japanese and english form. its a wonderful tome

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Basho-Complete-Haiku-Matsuo/dp/1568365373

again these are just my own opinions, i would never call myself an expert on the haiku, far from it, but i do enjoy the form very much.

Great stuff Stu. I love the expanse of your mind and how it settles on these exquisite and unsettling images. It's no use me trying to analyse your work as it would not suffice to do it justice. There is a sense of taking trouble to bring about mischief - quite compelling and rather erotic in its way.

JC - it's true that there is a absence of railway poems
from women. However, their presence with their kids at
steam train gatherings is encouraging. Perhaps it is the
prevalence of men designing and building these great
works that chimes with the male sensibility and obtains
lines from the likes of yours truly.
TH - thanks. Beeching was a product of his time, with the
existence of a transport minister
who was a construction boss keen on mega-highways, busy
pushing for more of the same as the public became more
affluent and thus more mobile and keen to get a personal
conveyance above and beyond two wheels. We live with
the results!

You hooked me with 'squid squadron infusion' and I never wriggled off the line thereafter. Absolutely enjoyed this torrent of superb words developing their acute observations from start to finish. 'Egg sandwich Nazi' idea is hilariously chilling, and superbly constructed.

Is 'sext' a sex-message? I'm so not 'with it' in the latest lingo. Clue me in, because I'm just guessing.

I wonder what kind of job fulfils your scope of observation and imagination, and knowledge.

I'm glad this poem isn't too long. It is its brevity and lack of depth that makes it so cutting and correct.
Watching people from the vantage point of a beggar, short-lived images, snapshots, instant character assessments, watermark the poem.

I love the potential of a briefcase full of ambition, and the daily anticipation of seeing the pretty girl.

But it is the woefully aching "are my children all grown up now" that catches one's throat.

Once again a VERY worthy winner of POTW

Thanks Colin for commenting. The problem with a tale like this is it can raise (or lower) expectations of an outcome. Bouncing balls could be the Dambusters, but just an image in fact. I have altered that line ; I wasn't quite happy with it either. Nice to have you in Blighty again!

Thanks David for your thoughts. Yes, the message theme was intended as you mentioned. I think my ending to this was just a sudden inspiration , but I think the attraction for the radio ham was always the undiscovered , and also the community aspect though invisible. I very much take your points and agree totally.

Taxing thoughts...that richer folk can employ people to
help them avoid (not "evade" of course) paying tax whilst
others rely on limited government schemes like ISAs to
tot up some savings.
