A simply brilliant poem Anna and a well deserved POTW. I agree with Julian and Graham that a part of it's richness lays in its brevity. Congrats.

Indeed, MC. Although I for one am not in favour of historical denial. Removing statues and monuments to those who we look on less favourably these days. Cecil Rhodes springs to mind. They did what they did, good and bad, in their times when mores were significantly different fronm now.

Good to see you tying in a famous song with an infamous
trade and one of its major ports (the other rhymes with
"pistol"!). The cruelties resonate down the years and
one wonders at the arrogance & greed of the gentry
that benefitted in an age when they could attend church
and spout the scriptures to suit their interpretations of
the "Good Book". The basic and base reality is that they
were able to convince themselves that the victims were
somehow less than human and beyond the protection of God's laws as they were accepted then. The Arabs had
been engaging in the trade under Islam and had (have?)
had their own rationale to suit their behaviour and the
power and profit it yielded. Indeed, one North African
country has only recently (in historical terms) declared slavery illegal...and there is evidence that there are
forms of it still practised now in less general terms.

Great and precise imagery to convey that terrible message - what poetry should be doing. I'm sure others who are not poets would be impressed as well as us who may be envious at the skill.

A really lovely piece Stu. Explicit and persistent - like a dream yet so real. It sounds like a tempting and slightly dangerous situation for the soul and peace of mind.

elP - thanks for your response. I can easily see how
valuable it is to have a background in discourse that
offers the cut and thrust of reasoned and rational
thinking about subjects, however controversial, under discussion.
Having been on this site for a while, I've seen plenty
of content from all sorts of "origins" and "opinions"
and have actually been invited to depart on one occasion because of my own considered response.
These lines originate from the experience of reading
a substantial and substantially varied content, and
occasionally meeting rigid refusals to countenance a
a reasoned reaction to what is written - as if some
see their positions and posts as virtually (and
virtuously!) "written in stone" on some poetical Mount Sinai. Happily, these are in the "me, me" minority.

The Ivy House is in Nunhead, south-EAST London. You're getting your SE15s and SW15s mixed up. I don't think Southfields has stuff like poetry. Either way, great to have one of the stars of WOL down this way.

Ahhh - I know what this is about, but never went there. I stayed up North to rave.
Wooden spoon, heh, makes me think of Tyres on Spaced ? We'd dance to the tunes in our heads whilst waiting for a cab.
I like the repetition of 'and you are my friend'. So Stu - what's yer name, where you from, and what you on? ?
Where do we go from here? I'm glad I had my days, but all I see now is a return to illegal raves I'm afraid. Or not, actually ?

very nice. reminds me a little bit (its a very tenuous link) of the film 'the man from earth' which is about a man that believes he is a cro-magnon who has lived for 14000 years and constantly has to move on from his friends and families. like i said, very tenuous but a good movie all the same.

The Americans are facing an absolutely horrible choice. Personally, I suspect Trump has done worse than talk. But then so has Hillary - aiding and enabling her husband to do all kinds of evil to other women. I would have voted for Sanders, but perhaps that is because I am, in Killary's words, "(a) basement dweller". Whoever wins, the American electorate loses..

What a brilliant event Julian! The best I've ever been to in terms of quality acts. Humour combined with intelligent, subtle, social commentary, scattered here and there with beautiful use of language.
I loved every act. Thank you Greg for a wonderful review. You did a great job but you'd have to have been there to really appreciate it!

Lots of questions here, MC..
I grew up in a house full of debate..much of it quite deadly in the idea that either you took the "right" side or you argued your way into a sort of mexican standoff and called it a temporary victory.
That said, I much appreciate tolerance provided to differing opinions..a strife gained seems a common ground lost, to me. Though, we both know that opinion differs much from action upon it.
One question: does "poetic" style really isolate people from meaningful intercourse?
Much appreciated..

TD - thanks. I've since changed a couple of words but
the meaning and the memory remain. Box had two stations
then: the larger archtypal local GWR station complete with sidings and depots - and nearer to the village with simple up and down platforms (no staff) a station that allowed a
fifties boy wonderful unchallenged access - even the fun
of placing pennies on the line while waiting for the next
express to pass...followed by a search for the remains
if any along the "sleepers" afterwards.

Hi, Laura,
I read this while at work today and was so happy to see someone post on this.
To tell the truth, I've struggled for decades to define exactly what I am politically. But, I surely know what I'm not--and, all the more clearly, now that I've seen my enemy repeatedly peep out of his snake hole.
