You may not have heard of Rick, but he and his cardigan are stalwarts of black country poetry slams and Brum Radio poetry. You can't take everything seriously and besides, it's harder to be funny than it is to be serious, poetically speaking.
Have a good one. Ray and Aviva

write..

Hi Trevor. It is true that on a stage props are vital, and the intellectual hanging woolly thing is vital - that goes back many decades. I must confess I had a thing about suede waistcoats for reading poetry, but it's really an affectation. I like the tribute aspect of this - but a Xmas sweater is never better, and as for the Matt Baker squeaky toy style - no thanks.
Prepare for a happy new year. Ray

John,
Thank you for this poem which resonates with me after living and working in the Middle East for nearly ten years. It felt a strong sense of outrage as it is clearly barbaric in the extreme and quite unnecessary in today's world. Yet it is the religion to which the slaughter adheres. Religion can be very cruel in other ways too.

There might be some for which this stays a fact
But I think very few end up like that
Far more find brand new good times in a world so wide
Without the troublesome lump still at their side.

Yes Greg I did the tweaking as I thought your points were well made as always, and thanks for them. It was tricky dicky to convey the actual experience into a cohesive line or two! Another one for the book one day I hope.
Thanks Graham, I do count that experience as a one worth having. Poets I think need to be observers and on the front line in whatever subject they choose to portray. The musical element in backing comedians was always minimal, often just a song that closed their act and a play on and play off.
Paul, that's a pretty good idea - all histories should be recorded as close to the truth as possible. A unique character could always be awkward on many levels but justifiably loved. Thanks for looking in.

No team has lost more points in the last 10 minutes than us, Graham. We’d be running away with it if we hadn’t. And 2 points in the last 12 is Sheffield United stuff.

Christmas Eve is the clue?
It sounds like you got socks JC, some of us got paracetamol! Blessed relief. Now if we could only stop gifting two points away at closing time I'd be a lot happier!

My response to your opening comment, Paul, about a deal already having been done seems pertinent now. I was wrong about the timing of the announcement which I expected in the New Year. I’d naively overlooked the value of Christmas as a blanket for burying scrutiny. The timing of the announcement, Christmas Eve, is the clue.

Thanks very much for your comments, Andy. Sorry to hear about more Zoom bombing incidents - there seemed to be a few at the beginning, but I had assumed that people had become more security-conscious, and that Zoom had stepped up their game, too. We've always been lucky so far in that regard at Woking. Good to hear that Stockport has been doing well - I've mentioned elsewhere about your anthologies. Interesting but worrying when you say that 'quite a few nights have stopped altogether'. Anecdotally I get that impression around London, too - or that some nights are just waiting for lockdown to end for good. I hope that techno-fear is not the reason - Zoom is really very easy to set up and operate, as you know yourself. It's a good way of keeping our poetry communities together.

Whilst I knew you were a musician, I didn’t pre-suppose that this piece was autobiographical in any way. It appears that it is.
A very complex, chaotic and difficult man, like many a comedian, the only one to make me nearly crash my car!
This is an intriguing snapshot Ray of the funniest one ever!
