I rely on Our Gert, MC. She is every bit as sadistic as the Turkish barber.

Hey - this grows on you. I've often wondered why men of a certain
vintage don't seem to have heard of scissors. Do they enjoy the
sight of the uncontrolled sprouting of grey gap-filling grouting when
looking into the mirror? ?

A sad but involving tale - "hair today and gone tomorrow"?
Tony is captured so well - an amalgam of all those barbers of another day with their big leather chairs that could be pumped up and
down with a foot pedal and were the inviting rest places for many a
male backside.

There's so much maturity behind these words which only wisdom through experiences can teach. Indeed a wise man who grows through difficult times rises above others with enriching experiences to share with others. Thanks to all the bad people, Experiences and storms that helped you understand the good ones and differentiate between the two and choosing the good and helping bad ones zo grow and improve.
Everything happens for a reason and for a season. What's pre ordained shall come to pass.?

I recall enjoyable St Patrick's Day evenings at my local - run by a couple of brothers with
origins in Galway. The shamrock skilfully "painted" into the foam of a pint of Guinness is a lasting memory. Sadly, the pub is gone and the brothers too. But the good times stay in the mind.

Thanks to Stephen and Keith for the comments. I based this on a recent radio four item RE a woman who went to visit her mother in a home within the last week or so following restrictions being lifted. The name has been changed and there is some artistic licence in some of this story, but it struck a chord with me
Thanks again for reading

Thank you all so much. I specifically didn't mention it, but our friend was a, "She," and not a, "He," and she was a ray of Sunlight in all our lives. We all know someone like this, if we're really lucky, and whether they're male or female, it doesn't matter, they're all precious to us all. She was a close family friend. Thank you all and be sure to cherish them. ❤❤

I often reminisce about those so called halcyon days only to realise, that although chaotic, they were somehow necessary as a catalyst for much needed change. The war years had left us exhausted and drab when suddenly there was this explosion of bizarre behaviour, dress and attitude. Those years have paved the way to a more free society, one which is more inventive and ready to embrace the new and shed the old.
A good poem indeed.
Thank you for this

Wow .A very powerful piece Keith. You don't pull any punches here and rightly so. We live in interesting times . it will be even more interesting to see how as society comes to terms with another change of circumstances when the ability to do all the things that we previously took for granted are available once again.
A superb poem Keith

As you may have guessed, I am not one of those who thinks everything was better when I was young. I remember a time when racism, homophobia, misogyny and class prejudice ran rampant. Not to mention the terrible food.
Of course, there were many good, nice people around and we all tend to look back through rose-tinted spectacles. And yes, many aspects of modern life are annoying. But I have little nostalgia for my younger days.
