I enjoyed this poem. I have to say my olnly time ever in a Travel Lodge, was as a child, over here you can count on them being clean and affordable. I can remember staying in them as they had a bear for their mascot. Other then that hotel a Best Western was considered good at the time and a step up. When the whole family would hop in the family van for a summer trip, it was those hotels we stayed in. I hope not all wives lie.If they do, I wonder why they feel they cant trust, who they are with?Whats a shag bag? I understand shag, but not the bag part. Why cant people just love eachother and be faithful?Im having heart troubles tonight. I have to go lay down xx

I found this poem a humbling experience to read - how quickly we forget how fortunate we really are...
So many images in this work Phil -
the one that stands out for me at this point has to be -
My future, a huge metal climbing frame
Twisted into impossible shapes
great choice Sean, thank you Phil.

Also, it is good tomeet someone who believes in reading and education in relation to our own development of writing!

Hi Gemma
Read your Blackpool Rock poem today. Great stuff. I also have a seedy side of blackpool poem on my Myspace prompted by taking my 8yr old daughter there recently (had to use selective hand blinkers!). Can I tell you what really amazes me however... And that is the fact that twice now I have seen you scribbling words shortly before reading! how does that work? Take it from me that everyone was shocked to silence at the Bolton performance course when they found out you had just written the "star fish - bed" poem you performed so well. (sorry can't remember the actual title) Cracking stuff,
winston

Hi Phil;
I think Nabila is spot on here, I think this is a really good poem but I think it is possibly a bit long - if I am honest I think with a little bit of editing or cutting, I think you really could have something here. Have you tried reading this out aloud yet out of interest?

Hi Phil
Ifeelcomfortable commenting honestly on your work and I feel you are one of few who is receptive tohonest feedback and seriously want toknow what ALL your readers think - which is great. When we are honest - we get slaughtered on here so I'm overlooking work on here that needs improving and i shall always comment on yours whether I like it or not. However, if , overnight , you change and decide you want to verbally slaughterme too - do warn me ;)
I love the starting - has a nice ring and the idea is great and appropriate. You really have mastered the punctuation, haven't you?!
The onlything I would like to add is that this is quite wordy and i feel would be moreeffective with big chunks taken out and 'joining' words such as 'and'.
Do critique mine too - u know I welcome it too!

Judging by much of the poetry out there, the words 'publishable' and 'standard' (in the modern sense of 'having worth') no longer apply in the poetry sphere. The Emperor is still naked, and has opened a poetry school . . . Even published poets, in hard covers (some long dead) wrote a lot of bad poetry - if you dare to read it objectively. I'ts all in the name; but now you don't even need that! Anyway - your approval much appreciated. Thanks.

NS was right and what she commented on the second time was after I took on board her advice.
Her constructive advice was beneficial and is something I will employ in future poems.

oops! a P.S.
If you're writing YOUR story, whether 100% autobiographical or embellished, remember that to everyone else it is just a story. We are all the most fascinating people in our own lives, doesn't always follow that we are fascinating people - the more autobiographical your writing is, the more difficult it can be to keep some onjectivity!

Some advice I was given years ago - may or may not come in useful ...
- Do a re-write, strip away every single adjective so you are left with just the skeleton, put back only those that make a difference to what you want to say.
- If you are really, really, really impressed with what you've written - put it in the bin.
- Prefer the anglo-saxon.
Would always be delighted to take a look at anything you've written.
You know the Clough? - whereabouts are you?

Yet another lovely piece of poetry in a flowing stream of emotion from you Melissa.
Although i can see where Andy's coming from in his comment. I feel it would give it more power if you break it up into stanza form.
A bit like adding a rhythmical beat to the lovely trill which is running through your river right now.
