Stephen, thank you for an array of words which speak the truth about most conflicts. People are not recruited to fight; they are coerced and mentally manipulated by politicians especially tyrants and dictators.

Skips along nicely Laura (no small feat): "Ballads, ballads, everywhere/ and no good word for me." You bring out the sublimity and the awe(ful) setting of Coleridge's poem: “Listen, Stranger! Mist and Snow, / And it grew wond’rous cauld: / And Ice mast-high came floating by / As green as Emerauld.”

Of course it’s a poem, MC. Didn’t you spot the subtle rhymes of “away” and “say”. I just haven’t chopped it into little lines yet.

I've reached that stage where I tend not to look back at my footprints in the snow, it's usually disapointing and the Stoics tell us not to worry about the past or the future, just the present. Nice poem.

A day in the life of one man but in reality of many more. A humdrum existence to be borne and got through. The whiskey numbs the pain which mind and body need to alleviate the endless drudge.
I can empathise with this.
Well and thoughtfully written
Thank you for this

Mmm. I am constantly looking back at my younger self, thinking how naive she was, how much she had to learn, but at each stage of life I truly believe I've reached a place of wisdom. Truth is, cliched as it may be, we never do stop learning, and that's actually a wonderful truth.

Many thanks, Graham and Keith. I found your remarks fascinating. I can certainly relate to things getting more difficult with age and to us becoming more emotional as we get older. I was thinking as well about the disappointment (in a way) of middle age. There was a time that I thought it was all begiining to make sense, but then I realised that I still knew very little. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing.
John - whatever you do, don't start now!

This poem speaks of cleansing, refreshing and the important part the natural elements play in sustaining the created order. Rain could be described as a sacrament.
Thank you for this poem which reminds us of the value rain plays in the life of the world.
