I agree with Anthony here Chris. Worth looking at the link as it was a bit fiddly getting it to work, and that will put people off.

Samples I always think are important on things like lulu.com.

Good luck.. A

Hi Janet,

I don't think this needs any tinkering with. You're having us on! It works well for me, the line breaks being effective punctuation. Don't chuck it away again!

A.E.

Hi Ann,

I always admire those who dare write about their dreams. Yours seem very well defined and vivid. Do you have a hankering for the Harem?

Do you believe that dreams have meaning - or are they jusy our brains doing their "filing" while we sleep? Loved "whale thick sea."
The only dreams I ever seem to be able to remember are the recurring ones ; especially those where I have the ability to fly. I never want to wake up from those.

Regards,
A.E.

Hi Chris,

Just to let you know that your link isn't working - you need to include the "lawrencejoefish" in the link. I did take a look at the site/book after some tinkering, but was disappointed to find that there were no samples of your work. Why not post some here?

Re cycle haiku - there's a question mark because although we've got to the end of the poem, we haven't got to the end of the cycle. It questions the notion of being complete, because the cycle cannot be so :)

A great poetic call to conscience to all those who have held, and continue to hold, the foolish and evil belief in human autonomy that has damaged the world so badly over the past few decades.

Particularly good lines...

'Fellow-prisoners know, but not mates

The barmaid knows, but not dates.

They're soaked in the walls of houses,

but kept from the ears of spouses.'

Big cheers for contemporary gnostics.

and churches - I'm not mad keen, but pretty ones like Cartmel Priory are a revelaton. I much prefer old mosques & minarets for some indefinable reason - I dont really know why, as I have no particular like or dislike of islam

Wonderful crafting. I love the title and the generic nature of the relationships - (does that word work in this scenario?. What I am trying to say is that the women involved are not necessarily the same - though I have the feeling it is the same man. I got the feeling that something had been sacrificed in the beginning and the loss of innocence is what could have led up to the failed second relationship.
The poem would also work if it were the same woman in both situations. I love the way that it is open to interpretation. All a bit sad and Casa Blanca - but you do it so well.
Better hit the 'add comment' and see what a load of drivel, I've just posted :)x

Ann its the journey thing and the hankering for past things (schoolfriends etc) I'm sorry I thought you'd woken up to see the lizard. Perhaps the dream contents deserve a bit more considering. Aren't they supposed to be allegorical?

So that told you Ann! LOL And I'm wondering what Graham might do if you don't sort it...

Graham has a point about the microscopic - though I didn't give it thought until he did.

The poem has an absurd, surreal feel to it - the one you would get from dreams that don't mean anything, I suppose.

You have some odd line breaks going on in here also. I've got a bee in my bonnet about line breaks since Anthony's thread - I'm starting to really notice them. Perhaps you wanted a disjointed feel.
An interesting poem. I've never written about dreams before - I feel inspired...

Hmmm . . . you are right about the word microscopic regarding the way it sounds, but I would query the fact that you could not see it if it was in a dream. Surely you can do anything in a dream? You can fly, so surely you can see something that is microscopic. Similarly, why do people suddenly appear in dreams, when you haven't seen them in forty years? I don't know. The images of the sea were the strongest ones in my dream, you are right there. And I am always missing buses in my dreams. In fact buses are a reccurring theme! I have no idea why.

Microscopic is a nasty word in poetry and is not correct, as you wouldn't be able to see it.
I think you should re-write this and change it around to accentuate the whale thick sea and the mountainous waves, the drama of the perilous cliff edges and why did this friend suddenly appear. There is a lot of potential intrigue here. Sort it out.

i thought maybe Dave was meaning the guy upstairs and wasn't counting himself(no doubt all will be revealed b4 long in this instance) but personally i think psychologists and counsellors know more secrets because himself 'up there' could be like Homer Simpson on a busy day and all the new stuff(everyday more secrets, requests,prayers,etc) might push out all the old stuff, so he'll forget things,whereas the professionals have to write them down incase we go completely doolally. but on the other score I felt compelled to investigate;
Confidants; plural of confidant
Noun: A person with whom one shares a secret or private matter, trusting them not to repeat it. Merriam-Webster.
Confidante;
A woman to whom secrets or private matters are disclosed.
1.A woman character in a drama or fiction, such as a trusted friend or servant, who serves as a device for revealing the inner thoughts or intentions of a main character.
[French confidente, feminine of confident, confidant.

Thanks for your comment on BITCH. I use the term bitch because I think sometimes when women act the way they choose instead of conforming to what's expected they are labelled a bitch and basically if that makes me a bitch then yeah well thats what I am. However thats other peoples perception of the word not mine! Hope that helps.

Isobel - They used to teach punctuation when i was at school too. It's mostly those flippin' colons and semi-colons that confuse me. I'm proud to say i got 96% in English language and 97% in English lit in my GCSE's but that was a very long time ago :-)
