Was it really on last week Andy?..
You capture the need to be in the hills very well..Some great rhyme and those last four lines had me looking for my boots! Nice work sir :)

Thanks guys - it was just an off the cuff little song I admit. I haven't written anything much all year - lost the knack a bit - so it's good to get something out there. I'm surprised it's struck you both as jolly and rollicking - it's supposed to be a bit sad! :)

"He's Off To Nova Scotia In The Morning"! Just the right title for a rollicking (thanks,Freda) full-blown shanty.
"Heave-ho, me hearties,
We'll sing it at Foxglove's parties!"
(Oh - it's "icebergs").
On a technical note...I go along with the comments from Freda. The material can surely adapt to a little tinkering that leaves the enjoyable exuberance intact.

A delightful evocation of summers long gone -
as comfortably familiar as the distant cry of
a cuckoo in the woods...or the shouting from a
farm hand ploughing a haze-warm distant field.

Excellent ballad Ann,
a few quibbles. If you leave out 'the' in the last line it scans better. The line before that has some extra syllables too, that interrupt the rhythm. Most of the stanzas work very well. I am puzzled by 'high's Truro's Cathedral Spire' because the awkwardness with the rhythm is in the three syllables of Cathedral, and is not changed by contracting 'high as' to 'high's'.
They are just quibbles though. This is fun and bouncy, and rollicks along nicely.

Hi Stef, congratulations to Evie for her poem, bless her, that's not at all bad for 6! And a chocolate ad, now you're talking my favourite food, haha.
Sounds like your Jakey did really well too. Yes, definitely thank heaven for our kids! xxxx

ps-Our Evie once won second place 1st grade
in the Laguna Beach California(where she used to live but now lives in San Francisco) Coastline newspaper Friday May 25th 2001 with this little ditty aged 6.
Bird Travelling
Bird travelling,bird travelling
it was fun to see you
when I saw your face
I liked it,when I saw you
It was a shame that you died
I wish you would come back to me
how I wish I could see you again
love you,bye.
mmmmm...don't give up your day job Evie-lol!
aww cute though.
another one for the braggon train Lynn-
Our Jakey aged three did a little better and became the Ray Mears lookalike in the July/Aug 2009 edition of Bushcraft and survival skills.
Nothing to do with poetry that is until we think one up for him with his pikky from the the mag that is soooo cute!
But Evie was'nt to be outdone
she went on to star in
the'Thorntons is choclate Heaven'add
Her line was-'you have to be good to get in'-
no Oscar's though I,m afraid-grrrr!
We will have to do a poem for her as well.
Thank heaven-choclate or not
for all kids eh Lynn.xx

look here bugger-lugs (but I love you)
i'm sure you'll get it
'allowed'
people that live in a controlled environment (a cocoon - favourite word?) have to be allowed to learn.
are all russians/chinese/north koreans allowed to learn? is someone in the foothills of the himalayas allowed to learn that not everyone outside their little part of the world is a complete shit
etc
i may have to come over the hills and then you'll 'learn' something

Harry - I wonder about the "advantages" of not
being acquainted with the certainty of death -
or is humanity presumptious and animals are just unable to tell us?
But animals aren't saddled wth making wills and paying for funeral plans, lucky devils!

Hi Kid
Superfacial
I did this about 3 years ago, and only popped it on WOL as a sort of rebuttal to the sentiment in 'Out' i.e. that I hope to learn, rather than having the closed mind of a bigot.
I think the 'allowed' in the last verse was to cover those who live in an environment where they have only limited information of the world that I live in, whether that be in other countries or other religions.
When I lived in S.A., there was virtually no free press; the radio was controlled by the Government, and there was no television service whatsoever, and we thought that we were relatively well informed. At least we had inter-country travel, which gave us a modicum of information
Explanation any good?

Hi Chris
Ta for the comment on 'Out'
You're dead right, in that I'm attacking bigotry. But I'm old enough and honest enough to admit that there have been times in my life where thoughts have crept through my head that I would rather weren't there, and I believe anyone who says otherwise isn't being totally honest.
I shall continue to battle the demons
