Moonlight, you had me at silence. It is such a powerful and magical realm. Not enough people know how to incorporate the serenity or the benefits of silence. I think silence scares some people because it will show them things they don't want to face.

My thanks to Graham, Steve, Manish and MC.

This poem was in part inspired by a 2018 film entitled 'Loro' (Them) which depicts Silvio Berlusconi's clan of entitled hangers-on and the desperate (and forlorn) attempts of a small-time racketeer to enter this world.

Of course, it also speaks (as Steve points out) to inequality and the ability of the uber-privileged to maintain their position by pleasing their backers and, if necessary, by lying. It is not a poem about envy or resentment.

I understand your point, Graham. I have had the same feelings as well. Respect is a big part of it.

I tried to write it in a rhythmic and entertaining way.

Thanks to Frederick, Pete, K Lynn,Hélène and Tim.

A thought-provoking premise. The sheer variety of life on Earth
can make us casual and often cruel towards some of it, perhaps
too quick to evaluate the planned purpose of an existence that
we may see as hazardous to our own in certain situations and/or
in numbers that can seem to pose a threat. The trick, I guess, is
not to "rush to judgement" in our ability to end any life form we
meet.

Why have others got a lot
And so remind me I have not?
Why does their pot hold so much
When my own is "such and such"
To help me go from day to day -
What lessons does life teach this way?
Has it been so since time began
As man sought to benefit from man?
With generations handing on
What they obtained before it was gone?
Meanwhile, we must always strive
To make the most of being alive,
With luck and tenacity in the right spot
I might obtain what others have got!
And might even have what they have NOT! 👍

Thanks Stephen,

I think that at the heart of society's problems are these ideas that some people are worth less than others, whether that's the King seizing the assets of people who die intestate in his duchies or the Government-backed othering of refugees, and I think your poem sums that up nicely. Through the eyes of the predator, we are all prey.

It’s strange how we ordinary folk are apt to castigate the wealthy or privileged for their position and advantage.
Then I think how I feel coming out of a supermarket with a trolley full of shopping and seeing the poor homeless chap and wonder what he thinks of me, my relative wealth and situation compared to his.
I think for all concerned these days it is all about respect or the lack of it!

this is bad writing
but sometimes it just has to come out.
when I'm awake I'm sure I could make something out of this. but that's not really the point.
there are a lot of times in my life that I'm thinking of right now where I should have followed.
someone leaves the room crying -- I should have followed.
someone disappears into a crowd, into danger -- I should have followed.
these are promises that I'm breaking:
"I will help you, I will protect you, we are friends;
I know you, I see you, I love you."
and ive failed.
ive let fear get between me and what's important.

I don't want to be that person anymore
I want to be real; I want to be me
but it's hard.

Thank you to all who liked this poem and to Uilleam and Manish for their comments.
Uilleam, your comment matches my many thoughts as I was born in the immediate postwar period on the outskirts of Birmingham and remember well a city still in ruins, not to mention Coventry a few miles down the road. I clearly recall bombed buildings and rationing. I lived in a world of people who grieved their losses, a local scenery out of some nightmare and on the table the most frugal fare. As I watch events in Gaza my mind instantly goes back to those grey wartorn days. War is utterly futile as there are no victors.
Thank you again,
Keith

Thanks for your comments Mark. It is one of the perils of a site like this that what I could call thoughts expressed with a sense of irony as in fact I try to do in order to have a sense of proportion (a balanced view) usually results in a polarized sequence of opinions, often due to bitter experience which is naturally to be expected. My poems are not glued into any sockets as such and I hope can bend in the wind of controversy. While I understand the bitter gall that society can throw up I try to stay well clear. So forgive me if I do not appear to lend credence to or criticize your views , except to say I know them to be truly felt and I appreciate that! I would only say that memories of previous incarnations do not always apply in the tides of current thinking. Whether that is for good or bad is probably for later generations to reflect on when we're long gone.

Thank you Stephen, your instincts are right in my case!

Thanks to Hugh, Tellboy, Reggie's Ghost, John Gilbert Ellis and K. Lynn, much appreciated.

MC, you can correct all you like; my estimate of thirteen years and six months +or- a few days still stands; because I live in the present and in hope; not as it were, in some fantasy of a Thousand Year Reich.

I've never claimed to have "a monopoly on virtue", but I do have a solution; it's called Democratic Socialism.

As for the protection and well being of the UK, of which you speak:
do you consider Home Secretary Braverman's decision some weeks ago to allow Spanish Neo Nazis and self-professed Jew-haters (who've been refused entry to Germany at Frankfurt) to meet in Preston, and to commemorate The British Union of Fascists' leader, Oswald Mosley as being in the interests of the UK's population?

UoC Can I offer a correction to your interpretation of my comment. You sought correct me about "fourteen" years - yet
surely by the time the next election arrives it WILL be that term in
office? As for the rest of your response, pray do not compound the error of thinking you have a monopoly on virtue
with tub-thumping stuff that offers no solution.
SG - your comment about Farage seems connected with your present whereabouts. He is labelled "far right" because he has the temerity to speak
out on behalf of the protection of, and social well-being of the nation state.
Anathema perhaps to a socialist POV.
