M.C`S point about television signals is very profound.
In this era of scientism we have all been kidded that an account of how we arrive at some technical `wonder` or other is a sufficient explanation of its existence - when the reality of it being existentially possible in the first place
is more mysterious.

Particularly like that last line.
The `sleight` and `sleeve` fit it okay...but the
`plough` made me long for for a `cleave` in it
somewhere. :)

Ian,
effective tragic use of the Villanelle,
(perfectly matched by the picture) Regarding John`s comment can only think of something like `home-bound`.
(And think it might be sadder if the last stanza was also addressed to the now dead husband)
Could be a goer for the Wilfred Owen thing.

Thank you both very much. I stopped doing something to write the poem. I think it was the dishes. My fella is the only one with domestic skills in this house Cynthia, and he is usually out taking pictures. But we do love this tip of a house and those dragged up children, oh yes, we do.

To be honest, not quite. I challenge the premise that you, the writer, are inherently 'evil', revealing the 'true nature of the beast'. It sounds sort of soppy, or 'sophisticated'.
You should look up the origin of 'sophisticated' and 'sophomore'. When I first did so, I laughed for days; it was so appropriate, and I had so completely misunderstood it before. It sure cut me down to size.
BTW, I like your work.

This is really good, downright quotable. That first verse is an instant 'catcher' in its outstanding imagery and thought; and then the second rolls right on as a splendid ending requiring reflection. I salute you, Sir.

I like to drop bombs at the end
Although I do like the resonance of the words it is the significance of the statement that is important. It is intended to form a harsh contrast with the rest of the poem - almost as though the narrator draws the reader in, offering a softness and a calm only to end with the true nature of the beast as it were.
I think the suggestion is that if something so evil can think like and see like that, it shouldn't be so difficult for everyone else. see?

You can't beat a good old mythical poem!
Really like the sounds you have used - "ghastly, void, vacant" is such a lovely thing to say even though the personalities of the words are so bleak.
I have also written a poem recently called Hydra.
Good stuff!

Really good villanelle, Ian. The repetitions drop in perfectly with the sense of the poem.
I find the rhythm of "returned" a bit of a hiccup.

Thank you for your comments on my Brevette Poems(Second Edition). I don't necessarily believe the poems I wrote. The original was a writing challenge for a Christian newsletter. But I try to keep a positive outlook. Sometimes this does not work. LOL!

There are so many known 'personalities' under severe scrutiny at the moment, I'm not sure which one is the 'target'; but that may be a good thing. The poem has a universality in it that might be spoiled by a specific allusion. The final two lines are really sharp.
You poke insightful barbs at societal inconsistencies really well.

Your innate skill for unusual associations and outstanding imagery continues, ever, it seems, more polished than the last poem. 'the navy scurry of office legs' and 'pinned folklore' are corkers. And the sound quality throughout is really breathtaking. As is the sustained mood, highlighted by the precise use of 'terrible', in 'the terrible bird'.
As 'biro' was about six years ago,'lacuna' is one of those 'in' words these days. Your usage is challenging.
I can see why commas were integral.

I'm presuming 'fall' in the last line, refers to the season? I like the concision of this piece - it has the restraint and depth of a haiku. The contrast of the American 'fall' and the more English 'pavement' is indicative of the time you say you spend between New York and London. Short and sweet - nice.

the equivalent (of a sort) to a shopping public.

A wonderful opportunity for poets out there!
If you love writing words, poems or song lyrics this is your opportunity. Send me your lyrics or poems and I will compose a song for you. 'Beauty of the Duty' started from a poem that I received on myspace and I edited it to become a popular BBC Radio play-listed song - so this could be your chance to hear your song on the Radio.
Please be part of my campaign to inspire others and gain this opportunity. Take a look at the rewards on the right hand side.
