Far out, man!
I recall it said that the biggest trick the devil pulled was convincing
people he didn't exist. The "far left" appears to manage this by campaigning to convince folk that they "care" whilst vilifying others
as uncaring. Only yesterday, the media kept referring to "the far right", yet fascist is a term that is just as accurately applied to the
behaviour of the far left in my own sharp end street duty experience.
As Alf Garnett might have said: "LIttle bleeders!" ?

ah yes MC - in the same way the media reported this as ant-anti fascist - when I went to school 2 negatives made a positive - i.e. Fascist ? and - in terms of the media - virtually all the media is right-wing owned - so my heart bleeds for you ? no really ?

Nice one, Ray..
Kipling surely wrote to entertain those of his time but he also had
the insight that propelled him into immortality. His "Processional
Hymn" has content that may be considered as racist but displays
many great lines - such as...
"Far called our navies fade away,
On dune and headland sinks the fire;
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre
Lord God of Hosts
Be with us yet
Lest we forget
Lest we forget"

I am a fan of short effective pieces of verse. Good one. However,
to add to the debate, I have noted a media dis-inclination to refer to
the "far left" when reporting scenes of public disturbance. Are we
to accept that there is no such faction? Or are they employed in
the media itself? Just curious. ?

A vivid vignette of a time that a certain number of us can recall.
My first car was an old Sunbeam Talbot which I brush painted bright
red. It had chromed steel bumper bars that were bolted to
projecting stanchions and promised no mercy for any vehicle close
enough to collide. My late step-father had a big Wolseley saloon
with room enough in the back to stretch the legs straight out. And
to the right and left of the rear seat were hanging grab handles for
passengers to hold for an added sense of security. Those were
the days of stately progress along the roads of England, long before
the advent of motorway madness. Thanks for the meander down motoring's memory lane.

The message is loud and clear but I think that there are many who
are labelled "sweet white privileged" who would find that their own
lives and sacrifices; their own poverty and grief - past and present - seem, as is all too often the case, to get lost in the mix. And then
there's that old thing about "poor white trash". Equality there ain't; equality of opportunity there should be.

the ultra right wing only get on with those who wear the same football shirt and would be too pissed up to be effective. I find it ironic that you say 'that was then - this is now' when all the right do is hark back to the 'good old days' ?

Well, that was then...this is now. Today's left is too PC to be an effective fighting force. They would not follow orders. They would question every order and only comply with those that met their criteria.

Thanks for the response Jennifer. You have touched on the whole essence of this current witch hunt which can be justified or condemned according to one's own attitudes. I used Kipling as I know he is buried in Westminster Abbey, and know that he along with other influential people of his time, may have unwittingly embraced "tainted" views that some might in the heat of indiscriminate passion be regarded as unacceptable.(An awful word really as it can be changed according to social attitudes).

What I admire about him is that he integrated in every sense and was able to pass on so much of his experiences for the benefit of us all.

Excellent Ian...and although I detest the ultra right wing I can't help but wonder that if the country was under the threat of invasion who could we trust to defend us....the left wing mobs who seem to hate this country and and want to erase symbols of our history, or the patriotic right wing yobs? Not a great choice but as you know I do tend to lean towards the right.

Hi Jason! Am fascinated by 'The eagle has been caged'. Does it refer to a country which has the bird as a national symbol? Obviously the US is out, Albania, Serbia, Russia, Moldavia, Mexico has it on their flag? Obviously it would be a country which has been invaded and conquered. 'Wings forcibly furled, the freedom to which it was born, the killing of its young ' etc. If so might be Albania? Perhaps just lamenting the loss of freedom in general? Fantastic poem.

It must be difficult for daughters like you! You don't want to disappoint your parents, whom presumably you love, but their idea of a woman's life is not yours, obviously. Far too passive. Good idea about the cats!
The poem expresses the problems very clearly!

If you read Kim, the whole book is a hymn of love, affection and understanding for India and its peoples. Also in 'Kabir's' verse -
In my brother's voice I hear
My own unanswered agonies.
His God is as his fates assign-
His prayer is all the world's - and mine.

Kipling made his living from his writing, and so was at least partly constrained to comply with the general mindset of his times.
History is history for better or worse. Nowadays it seems that history is only this year's.
