I align myself with Germanic mythology surrounding trees.
It is easy to dismiss the followers of GAIA, at least for now...that may not always be so.
Provocative thoughtful writing, as ever.

Maybe with a little help from the spirits of the wood? People dismiss the 'fanciful' at their peril. I hope the decision turned out well for you Ray. Thanks for your continued support. John

Thought provoking piece.
Happiness is a state of being
When we achieve our goals and dreams
It may mean different things to different beings
For some Happiness is materialistic well being
For others it could be soul's contentment and peace

Trees should be our friends as indeed they would be if we cherished them instead of obliterating them, and as you say for what? Grandiose schemes with short term interests at heart. I made a massive personal decision once and sat under an old oak under I found an answer within myself.

Thanks for your comments, Keith and Steve, and for your Like, K.Lynn. I'm afraid that Gorbachev's death is a sobering and deeply symbolic moment.

We do indeed salute them - salute their bravery, and determination to resist and repel the invader. And Putin pretends that Ukraine is part of Russia. These defenders give the lie to his self-deceit.

Stephen thank you for your like and your comment is greatly appreciated, it is easy to think of fighters as trained professionals, I was trying to show that this is not the case here.

A clever poem with humour and good imagery. My reflection in today's mirror provided a landscape ravaged by war and over indulgence in a time of peace.
Good poem.

Thank you, Greg. A timely reminder of how things are going backwards in Russia. So sad to see a great country and civilization being dragged down like this, but even sadder for the people of Ukraine who are faced with the consequences.
The glimmer of hope offered by people like Gorbachev is being snuffed out.

Greg,
well said as you sum up the tragedy which took place 22 years ago when all the good work that was achieved by Gorbachev regressed into another empire of evil under the serial killer Putin. With Reagan we were filled with such hope of a peaceful future. Now we are in a situation far worse than the Cold War.
Thank you for reminding us in this poem of how we reached this awful place.

John,
I really enjoyed this poem and in particular the illustration of the two balconies. There are a few such houses not far from where I live. The line in the poem which caught my eye were the words, "To reach out beyond the selfishly human." I have found from experience that this is so very true.
Thank you for this

Thank you again Keith and Ray and sincere thanks also to Stephen G, Holden. Pete and Stephen A. Yes bureaucrats love nothing more than seeking to bully and intimidate the 'common' people. That is we must resist threats to free expression and attempts at intimidation at all costs.
"The peculiarity of the totalitarian state is that though it controls thought, it does not fix it. It sets up unquestionable dogmas, and it alters them from day to day. It needs the dogmas, because it needs absolute obedience from its subjects, but cannot avoid the changes, which are dictated by the needs of power politics. It declared itself infallible, and at the same time it attacks the very concept of objective truth." George Orwell
