A promissory note

“Love takes off the masks we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within.” James Baldwin, ‘The Fire Next Time’

They say love pays no bills
That love cannot live with caution
That passion is akin to madness
That love is firm and never jealous.
That love is a many-splendid thing
That requires no ring
Nor note of affirmation.
Love is the most unknown of unknowns
We must strive and dream and grasp
To reach out beyond the selfishly human.
Love frees us from the bondage of desire.
We gamble on love,
Love sweeps us off our feet,
And leaves us bleeding, palpitating:
Strangers in a strange land, but complete.

John,
I really enjoyed this poem and in particular the illustration of the two balconies. There are a few such houses not far from where I live. The line in the poem which caught my eye were the words, "To reach out beyond the selfishly human." I have found from experience that this is so very true.
Thank you for this
Keith
