i like this, Janet although I am not sure if you need the last line as it gives it a twist that is perhaps a bit too tellie for my liking... i like the feel off the piece a lot thou (Hasnt their being a film or book called that?)

Hi Janet
I needed something to take me away, and this may be it.
Very pictorial. I could almost be there.
But do I want to be?

That degree finally pays off!
I love Richard, he has a very powerful presence, and is an excellent performer, and his poetry always comes from a well informed place.
And, there was a clip of him ranting at the crowds at The Fringe on Channel 4 News!

Hi Lydia
I liked this. It reminded me of the Abraham Lincoln quote "Every man over forty is responsible for his face". I'm sure he meant women too.
Some young women seem to aspire to be Barbie Doll lookalikes, as you say "bland, the same as any other". But when maturity and life experience come together with real individuality and femininity in a middle aged woman, Barbie eat your heart out.

Thank you Isobel. Sorry for for the delay in appreciation I have been away in the wilds of Shropshire attending a workshop to reconnect with my inner manliness and care of the beard. It was run by the spooky men's chorale- a fine body of men who everyone should see at least once in their lives

Hi Cynthia
Thanks for the comment. I wrote this when helping at a local school, and saw the mothers dropping off their children on Day 1. Half elation; half tears.

Stephen, this is delightful, and oh! so true. My relationship antennae are vibrating vigourously. We are introducing a 3-year-old to Infants 1 this year.. Thank God, it's not all day.
Comment is about 1st Day Reflections (blog)
I should just add that in performance poetry, issues/language don't jump up and bite you on the bum, like my poem just has. Language is soon heard and soon forgotten. Anything written down is there to be read and reread forever and a day - that is why we all need to be very careful about what we commit to paper. Never argue by mail (as some of my family have) - not easy to forget words that can be refreshed.

I don't know David. Perhaps people just want to feel rebellious and naughty sometimes - I know I do. I just feel like venting all my frustrations in some way. Perhaps I should buy a cat, then I could go and kick it. Will probably never write another poem that contains so many swear words - it was just a phase I was going through - probably cos I knew someone at the time who swore a lot - it must have rubbed off.

But why is there so much swearing, and shock tactics, in "performance poetry"?

You cover very well the period of 0-5 and yes I've never struggled too hard parting myself from them at the school gates! This poem will speak to all with children cos it isn't an easy task raising them - a poem on ages 13 - 18 could be hellishly entertaining...
Comment is about 1st Day Reflections (blog)
Sorry if I've offended you with my recent poem David. I try never to swear in front of my children and only rarely in poetry. This was written primarily as a performance piece, not for page. I tend to perform only in pubs where the audience is largely inebriated and accepting of all forms of language. I do take your point.

Hi Emily,
read this a few times and like - the take off at the end is subtle and discreet dawring the poem to a close
would consider breaking the lines up - as i read the poem it lends itself to this possiblility -
these are the streets
of your neighbourhood
and i walk them
without you

I've never had a holiday affair - but I guess it might feel just as you describe. Coming down to earth after being on such a high would be a difficult balancing act, especially if loyalty has been compromised.

Thanks for your kind comments Lenford . While my current mission is to contribute rubbish and trivia to this fine site, I do it as a perverse tribute to awesome writers like yourself. Where did you learn to write or does it just happen? As Mr Jellyhead, who died five years ago this month, and who we will be commemorating at the Man and Scythe in Bolton Sunday 13th September, often said the only rules Dave, are that there are no rules". I think that's the kind of statement that encourages lengthy and healthy discussion on Write out Loud. Look forward to reading more of your work and seeing it get recognised in a wider arena.
Dave

I like this Cynthia. You've managed in just 14 lines to give an impression of someone having 14 thousand thoughts and feeling, which all feed into a state of agonised tension, remembrance and longing. I liked your previous one too - sorry I didn't comment. Thanks for yours on mine (not autobiographical)

Absolutely beautiful Peter...
So much heartfelt emotion in these last lines:
'I made your name the last time
We finger traced it together
Like a running raindrop game
On a window
this pain of leaving
her voice distant
that laughter of motherhood
a melancholic memory
our childhood in the garden'

Funny that I should happen across this as I was leaving you a comment on your profile page. Today I was reading and reflecting on writings by Lao Tzu from the Tao Te Ching, and one in particular was about not looking to others for your fulfillment etc...
Your poem essentially has the same message with the added consequences of surrendering that power to another.
Very thought provoking...

Good write, but slavery goes onto today and very little is written about it, it is ignored by most, think, Niger, Mauritania, Chad, Sudan, and thats just the start, think India, Uzbekistan.
Forgotten , think slavery in the Gulf States, KSA, whoaaaaaaa cant talk about that folks.

Hi Dave, love your poems, especially the one about Mr Jellyhead, clearly a much missed man. In answer to your question some months ago. We are all very good at getting things very wrong - probably becuase we are mere mortals. Just just thought that Una, being a god and all, just might be able to help us.
