Hope Square

Hope Square

A Place where

People linger and stare

Waiting

Watching as others go by

While some sit eating

Smoking drinking.

What a cruel name,

Hope Square

For a place where

Nothing actually happens.

An ugly man passes my line of vision

I sigh……..

Burgers and fries

From McDonald’s, which claims

It is “going that extra mile”

To protect the environment

From their litter

As human Beings

Consume greasy non-nutritional fodder

In a non-nurturing, sterile arbour

Of hard chairs and plastic umbrellas

Ignoring the “healthy meny2 choices

Served up in sacrifice to media pressure

In recycled card

In an atmosphere of displeasure.

I say, who named this area

Hope Square
?

Was it before or after

The frenzied feeding of a McDonald’s

Or the placement of the train and bus station?

Was it before or after the beggars came

That hope left this quarter

For greener pastures?

Hope

Hope Square

A place where

People gather in open air

For passengers, or transport, to catch

Not seeing the newly appointed statue

Darkened by will

Where others like they

Chatter

In assumed busyness

Hoping that time may or may not stand still.

◄ basic as I am getting going

EEK! (With acknnowledgement and apologies to Coleridge?) ►

Thanks for the encouraging comments, maipenrai and Janet; and to that end I have one more before I take a break from posting and just read more. It is a long one as befits the last for a while.

You know what Beulah? I don't think this needed an explanation as to it's whereabouts.
The imagery for this could be in any major town or city, it is so very familiar everywhere.
I agree it's a good write.

Hope Square is a 'rectangle' just outside McDonalds on Bishopsgate London, near Liverpool St. Station
