I would echo what the others said - very moving and a delightful read, Stephen.

I loved it all but particularly

at a deep-dipped sun.
Super poem, Holden!

Thanks for all the comments, Julie, Flyntland, Greg and Stephen. Yes, it is a horrifying situation and, sadly, there is probably more of the same to come. As we have said many times, there are no real winners in war - everyone comes out of it damaged. Even the perpetrators of this (who of course should be brought to justice) as diminished as human beings.
Greg- It was a pleasure to be involved and Phil was also glad to meet you and the others.

A fine, close-knit poem, Greg. 'Precision' is the word, I think. This morning, you could feel a well-oiled machine turning. For some reason, the whole procession made me feel rather miserable - perhaps the sight of the hyper-drilled establishment rumbling into action was a bit too much. It rather got in the way of the funeral, I felt. Nevertheless, an impressive spectacle which was covered in full on TV in Belgium (all channels were cleared) and in many other countries, I'm sure.
But things will be different, as you say.

Loved ' I hope you 'll love what's left of me'. Beautiful poem, and growing old together so well expressed.

Really touching. Loved 'tghe land still ached', and the tears 'grateful not distressing.' So well said.

You have conveyed the solemnity of the occasion and the 'New Dawn' in so few words - masterful

Thanks Frederick, Stephen A, and Holden for the likes, and Graham for the comment. Graham, perhaps you think most of them went down below?! Many of the ancient ones yes, but I think there have been some recent ones who deserve better. She certainly did.

It is my son's birthday today and we drove a short distance to deliver cards/presents etc. You could have heard a pin drop in his Victorian Terraced street. Absolute silence!
Your piece conveys the pomp and colour of this once in our lifetime event well Greg. The line martial yet mournful is very well crafted indeed and says everything in very little words.
The last three lines portentous. I wonder what's in store.
A thoughtful piece

Stephen I agree it is not a pretty poem and thank you for your comment, you are a great confidence giver when I have chilling doubts.

Brave submission, Steve.
I'm not an avid monarchist nor an avid republican. I am conflicted between the theory and the practice. In theory, I prefer by far an elected leader rather than one based on inheritance. In practice, I look at who this would have given us over the last 50 years, eg Boris and Margaret Thatcher.
Paradoxically, a monarch would have been (and still is) far less divisive for the nation than any elected partisan leader.
On balance therefore I find myself a reluctant monarchist.

"in spite of anger, we shall grieve"
nothing more that I can say.
