Congratulations.
but on that island thing,
why did you pick your brother-in-law?
and not your husband?
your long-suffering husband,
beaten out by his own brother...
this raises many disturbing questions.

Even the 369th Infantry of the US were never paid proper dues by their own country for their ferocious skill and contribution in wartime during the Great War.
Great poem, John, as I'm sure you can tell from the warm reception.?

I remember Pharlap - Aussie wonder horse of yesteryear
whose demise was said to be skullduggery because he was TOO successful (for the crooks' liking!).
You have another down there now, I hear - a mare, I believe, who seems unbeatable. Fingers crossed for her!!

My reference work on phrases and fables makes NO mention of All Hallows Eve being anything to do with witches
and the rest so popular nowadays. It does mention the word as a derivative of that describing a holy man in the past, logical since All Saints Day follows on. There are
mentions of customs like bobbing for apples but NONE of
the current stuff. So, are we victim of some imported
additions that have no connection with out own calendar
date but provide useful commercial opportunities far in excess of mere fruit? Who can we blame? Let's do it soon!!

Data protection? But then I have a sneaking feeling that if I
were an employer, I would wish to choose those working for me...not have it done for me by legal process or its threat. I can see why "family" firms like to keep it in the family, to see their plans and intentions through and not
waylaid by the imposed participation of others whose
commitment and reasons for applying may not be what is
sought by those with most sacrificed and most to lose.

Hurrah for the positivity - and the trouble taken to put one
of Churchill's favourite poems into a more modern idiom.

Neatly constructed with a nod to our human fallibility -
Followed with a blind devotion
That surrenders logic to emotion.
But it seems that (near or far) fate
Will see us meet the devil incarnate!

November is a month of Remembrance of which All Souls Day and Remembrance Sunday are particular solemnities. A fitting month I have always thought as the season is also indicative of death. A powerful indictment on our inability to create a better world out of such sadness and inequality.
Thank you for this

Life should be that simple Mark, but we need to be awkward and challenging as well as anodyne in our work. Nevertheless the sentiment is a good one.

Remarkably soothing and yet slightly disturbing with the questioning you are so prone to do Peter. You go inside a theme and view it from the very heart of it, spreading out all you imagine. A real treat and a feat too.

I'm sure there are some - perhaps even many - good, rich people, deserving of their wealth and philanthropic to a T. I'm sure MSN online also talks about those that are throwing their money around to blur climate change research, pay backhanders to get access to profitable but environmentally distastrous projects, taking private jets halfway across the planet on a whim, and generally selling all our futures for the sake of their own immediate profit. It doesn't do to generalise about rich people, I guess, any more than it does to make generalisations about beggars, people on benefits, migrants or "leftwingers".
Perhaps I over-reacted to your original comment in reading it as dismissing protest as a foible of youth. (I guess I was also nettled at the dig at poor Joe Hill, although it was a play on words he probably would have appreciated). I'm sure "protest" is sometimes - often, even - far from the best way to bring about change for the better. But we have to do SOMETHING, surely?

A tree without an apple
Could be any tree
Even if it bared lots
It's bare for all to see
The last one it did hang on
Oh so valiantly
Some little blighter picked it
Was saving it for me ?

I don’t travel very much but am always inspired to write when I do. this is a lovely, quietly beguiling piece Peter. I can see you sitting there compiling this and the view etc. Interestingly the tick/tick of a clock can be both peaceful and irritatingly noisy.
