This is a disturbing poem and reminds me of the trains packed with young men being swept off to 'The Front'.
The rhythm backs up the image.
The last two lines are so chilling, 'they' also wanted the right to live.

A Royal who was a fan of The Goons and could stand being
referred to as a "snivelling bastard" by the creator of that radio
lunacy is quite likely to display a rueful smile at this gentle
referral to a well-known personal feature. But don't bank on
a knighthood!

The words are sharp and right to the point - like that of a
bayonet! An excellent prelude to the coming November
when Remembrance Day will also have added resonance
for the absence of our late Queen, its guardian over so many
occasions at the Cenotaph.

Fun as usual -and I always liked the other Twitty version!!.
But I'm concerned about "...and so (sic) Queezie had to so" -
apropos your previous post. 😋.
Politically speaking -
There's a question hotly burning -
How come this lady was for turning?
Should we suspect that anything global
Disguises motives far from noble,,,
And that the beleagured nation state
Is beset and besieged by hidden hate?. 😐

As a Labour supporter, Graham, I am a bit concerned at the clamour among opposition parties for a General Election. It won’t happen, of course, but it would be a good one to lose. None of the problems we face will magically disappear because of a change of government.

I have a similar dislike, inclusive of the word *so* and that is when someone describing a conversation with someone else
( obviously! 😁 ) tells of it in this way-
SO he turned round to me and says...blah blah blah
and SO I turned round to him and says....blah blah blah
what I would like to know is, since when did people start having conversations back to back? 😏

JC - would that have been a "parsing phase".? So, what's new in language use?. Like man, it's flexible and used for effect, daddy-o..
Know what I mean, John?! 😍

Thanks, MC. Many years ago when the bow and arrow was a secret weapon and I was a pre-pubescent at the Grammar School we studied completely pointless subjects like Latin and Greek Mythology. And Parsing. This entailed recognising the role of words and phrases in any sentence eg subject, verb object, adverbial qualification etc. When it starts an answer, the word “so” has no purpose whatsoever.
