I'm presuming this could also apply to people? You are good, girl.
Those shorter formal structures of poetry which I mentioned before are just plain fun, Joan. If you don 't find them, give me a shout; I know you would enjoy them.

Very interesting, Marianne ... runs fast and deep with unusual comparisons. What is 'teathered'? I looked it up but couldn't find it. 'The river is corseted' is superb.

Very observational. I would disagree with the line about never losing an argument with yourself though. Done that loads of times.

Never have to 'hire' private taxis chuck - get enough offers of a free lift. Whether it were male or female driver would make a HUGE diffference. With a woman, front seat, having a chin wag. With a man, definitely back seat...

I love nostalgic poems which bring so many memories to the fore as does this one.
Being from a large family myself i can definitely associate with the squashed up kids on the back seat and far too many for the number of seat-belts. ha ha.

Thanks everyone for the comments on this.
Isobel and Cate- it's simply a case of expectation v reality. Cynthia has it spot on really. How great is the need and how far up or down the list are we in order of importance.
Some people spread themselves so thinly it leaves little time or space for the ones who should matter, leading to disappointment.

Your thoughts do run deep ... fish or no fish analogy. I can see where a fillip of light-heartedness would be a welcome relief. Your poetry is fantastic, and in no way am I ever doing anything except teasing a bit. Perhaps I am too forward. Some poets wear tension like a brass halo.

Hi Winston
I truly appreciate your comment on 'Time Flues'. I enjoy reading your writing, but feel somewhat inadequate when it comes to commenting.
For some reason, I also particularly like the verse that you highlighted
Thanks again. Perhaps our paths will cross at a reading. I have just 'read' for the 1st time. I think Hebden Bridge is about the furthest I may venture, not having a passport to get out of Yorkshire. I'll have to try and get enough bottle to stand up again.

Hi Yolande
Glad you enjoyed 'Time Flues'. I'm embarrassed to tell you that this was Dewsbury in the 50's. We were always a bit behind the times here.
I really do appreciate your comment, and hope you enjoy the cross-over from music to poetry. I can't hold a note, so I can't cross back.

Hi Bernie
You may not get too many comments on this even though it has a hell of an impact (perhaps 'hell' being the right word). People may feel as I do that anything they say can't measure up to the reality and it's better to stay quiet. Please don't construe silence as apathy though - we're just out of our depth. Well done for having the courage to be there and to put it into words

Hi Stephen,
Great stuff this, much enjoyed reading it. Win
liked the rhythm in this section -
Clouds that gathered, as they drifted along,
The grit and the dust and the grime
Blown from the mines and the spoil heaps
That had formed, over who knows what length of time.

A very evocative poem Steven. It reminds me of some really great songs I have heard by The Houghton Weavers where they describe the life and times of the 20s and 30s.
