A very accomplished one,this Ray! Love the language,"Others made stupid by insupportable grief,melancholic weight causing the head to sink in degrees until barely seen above shoulders".
Thanks also for your advice on my tenses.You were right!

An enjoyable light hearted Ode to the Bath!
My favourite;

Your use of the word 'may' in this context almost has a imperial feel to it. 'The map is still pink, if the pink gin falls upon it dear chap', he says monocle slipping Hehe

after reading about the possibility of waking dreaming or lucid dreaming in the books of carlos castaneda, I tried for years without success, then out-of-the-blue the first time was on hols with my then girlfriend on tenerife. Carlos' way of getting into a lucid dream is to find your hands in your dream. in the (ordinary) dream I was standing at the Trevi fountain & there were fish in the water. I saw a transparent fish go by which I thought was odd, then I saw another fish but this one had a lion's head - I thought "this cant be real", so I MUST be dreaming - in which case, find your hands I said - I looked down & there they were (not just hands, but MY hands). It was such a massive shock I just woke up instantly with a thumping heart but very thrilled. It happened only 6-7 times in 20 yrs - so I wrote them all down. The best was where I was washing my hands in a lemon coloured sink with chrome taps - I found my hands & was awake in my dream. Within my dream I thought - "this is odd, because it's more real than real life - so why ?" I decided that in the dream world, everything in front of me 180 degrees was in sharp focus the whole time, whereas in life you have to focus on one thing at a time & that was the crux. I was amazed by this revelation even within the dream, but also realized that if I wanted to, I had no idea how to wake myself up. Just then I "felt" a presence to my left & looking up it was me - looking at me !
I wasn't shocked, just interested, cos carlos says that in a dream you can ask any question & you'll get the true answer - and guess what - I couldn't think of a single thing to ask or do - I could have gone flying, walked out into the street - anything - but I couldn't think of anything I wanted to do or ask (damn ! ) -
then I woke up - still amazed by the clarity & super-reality of it all - not like any dream ever - this was as real as real gets !
these dreams are the most exciting things to ever happen to me bar none - I just wish I could do it to order !

A simple enough premise- the list.
But poetically it works really well when intelligence is applied.
You do not appear to present any judgement, simply listing and juxtaposing the various themes and vagaries that can leap to the fore through a would-be or actual adolescence.
But the final line offers up some strange notions/feelings related to how our present becomes our past.
What is to come cannot be listed of course.
And this to me at least brings a feeling of contrast to all that has gone before.
How silly it seems with the benefit of hindsight that the trivial takes its place next to the significant. The sacred alongside the fluff of life.
Is this just profane?
No of course not.
This is of course how life is lived- literally in time.
With hindsight people often edit out this nature of reality and paint life through tinted specs.
I like what you've done.
Chris

I like the opening two stanzas; a book being no less giving for being second hand and...the idea of the book resting with the reader now left in sleep is pleasant, delicate and humorous.
I like the notion of a book being shared being a precious gift, almost intimate...a beautiful idea.
Your final line highlights one of the great joys of the novel, to not only take us to other places, but to make of us something else.
Nicely thought...
My Best
Chris

I like this;
Capitalism and all that is inherently wrong with it
'in a nutshell'.
I am not remotely religious, in fact I am an atheist, but it does seem odd and worth pointing out that;
The nice bit of Christianity, the new testament bit of helping your fellow man and sharing etc.
Of feeding the thousands with loaves and fishes etc...well it is all very socialist isn't it?
Capitalism is diametrically opposed to Christianity and yet the most praise-be, there can be no other way to go capitalist society (the US) is supposedly one of the most religiously Christian nations in the world.
Has anyone pointed out the hypocrisy to them or to right-wing Christians in general?
Chris

Thanks for your comment Melanie. I was deeply moved by one of your poems but just couldn't put into words how it made me feel. Raw poetry tends to be like that on here. It sometimes attracts less comments cos people don't know what to say.
On a lighter note, I'm loving your hair colour - it is bright and young and vibrant. Just what the me now, should have done back in my youth. I it is good to see you enjoying WOL. Take care.

I'm with Ann on this one - an incredibly moving piece - particularly that last verse.
I love the title - I've always believed that healing yourself involves letting go of blame - seeing the reasons for behaviour in those who let us down. Your poem exemplifies that. To be fair to others on here though - how much we can all do that depends on the situation - some things can never be explained away or justified.
'To find sunshine in the frightening cellars of my parent's pain' stood out for me. It is sad how we all hand on pain, isn't it? I'm pretty sure you have managed to break that chain though Cynthia.
I loved the poem. It is a deeply memorable one and will stay with me. x

I thought you said you didn't/couldn't DO visceral rage?!
Resonates deeply with me. I finally managed to love myself too, some of us brave/lucky/strong ones do. Still hugely affected by my own childhood though. Some things I just cannot shake.
This is a brilliant piece of writing Cynthia - thank you so much for sharing it.
