Incidentally, Dave Bradley commented on the poem and said that he had to look up the word "milf". You didn't have any problem then?

Mark, I'm sure people will be gentle. And also that they will be both impressed and very moved. This is a good, well-crafted poem, but obviously far far more than just a bit of versifying. Truly heart-wrenching. Something which could be repeated by many different women and is too little told.

Tanks for the comment on 'Sailors Are Very Strange Men' John. When I looked onto your page my eye was drawn to the title of this one (probably because I have always wondered about some of my grandmother's gentlemen callers)and enjoyed how, from line one, you created a very real person in front of our eyes. Brilliant!

Hello John, Thanks for your comment on 'Sailors Are Very Strange Men'-and I am pleased that you posting led me to your page. Tom Pudding I especially enjoyed-it sent me scurrying to the search engine! As a recent incomer to Yorkshire (my wife is a Wakey lass, this was my passport in!) I am getting a lot of pleasure from exploring this areas industrial past, the fact that people such as yourself are recording it in verse is brilliant. Very inspiring.

Thanks for your message, Lynn, and sorry that my comments about Dad's Army were fairly incoherent. But that's the trouble, I think, the concept of English patriotism is difficult to get to grips with. For me, anyway. Glad you enjoyed East Budleigh, as I did your poem Childhood Friendship. That theme dug into a rich seam, didn't it? We once had a holiday on the Pembokeshire coast, at a place called Little Haven. Unfortunately it was the week of the Chernobyl fallout drifting over Britain, and our 15-month-old kept stuffing lumps of sand in his mouth. Nerve-wracking!

Indeed! She sounds a hoot. I sense that in spite of all her antics, she is well loved. People who have a good rant are normally fun and entertaining to be with. Nothing worse than a repressed tight lipped careful person round a dinner table...

Strange mixture of religion and violence, delivered with your usual meticulous selection of language, Ray. "Let others have the patches". I didn't understand that reference, though picked up enough from the Ben Shermans, Dr Martens, and Harringtons to understand that Sammy/Keith was a skinhead or suedehead. My brother used to wear all that gear.

Hi Val, I enjoyed the poetry performances at Butterflies last weekend. Thanks for your comment re Solar Power, it is much appreciated. I have heard Invisible before and enjoyed listening to it again. A lot of poems are more enjoyable when familiar, like music, I can look forward to certain lines. There ahould be more poems promoting or expressing feelings about the over 50s.

Its hard to keep your hands off them sometimes eh? Had some on my bus today just kept his finger on the stopping bell for nearly half an hour and thought he was being Tommy Cooper or someone hugely funny - so it isn't just me who gets furious inside - your poem well crafted and certainly a piece of social history of modern Britain x

Gosh, Greg, only just seen this message, sorry. Agree about extremists, lowest of the low, and agree about Dad's Army too, it is the best.
I think my poem makes me sound much more patriotic than I actually am. My inspiration to write it was on reading in a puzzle magazine about a British actress. I realised she must be English, otherwise they would have stated she was Welsh or Scottish. This is where I think our pc has gone silly.
