Marvellous stuff, RAP. And a lesson that the quality of leadership isnât the monopoly of any one political wing.

Really liked this one, and on the whole agreed with it.
The only one I'd take issue with is Winston Churchill. He is much regarded as our greatest ever political leader, but when you look into his ideologies I'd take even this current shower of shit over him.

Anyone ever having experienced such an entanglement would surely recall it with conflicting emotions. At once exhilarating and exhausting.
The escaping is the hardest part.
A fine tiny poem.

Hi Tom,
One of the great things about poetry in its many forms is it helps us feel not so alone (even when we perceive ourselves to be)
To know our feelings are universal is of comfort. That comfort is not always felt at the time of greatest need but often is realised upon reflection. Reading and listening to your words did remind me of that desperate feeling of being cried out. I recall it almost being a turning point, as if I could go no further. Maybe it was the point at which things turned around...I don't recall, but it's a thought.
I enjoyed the poem and your recital of it.

You've stirred a familiar pot of school day memories here.
My grandfather told me once when I had complained of being bored, "Only boring people get bored, as long as you have a brain you should never be bored." I took his message to heart and my imagination got me in double the trouble at school after that. đ

True, unconditional love, the single most important gift in the world.
Of all the things one may receive
Is to know true love and believe.
What an inspirational and beautiful poem Clare.

Clare - thank you for sharing your experience and liking the poem. And thanks to John C, New Shoes, MC and Uilleam for their support.
I am pleased to see all views shared in this blog, although it was a bit of a surprise to see Arthur Scargill's name appear.
The world doesn't stand still, of course. It is sad that many of the old public conveniences are gone but in those remaining the job has evolved. The bloke at Brussels Central Station now has to operate a digital payment system as well.

I'm so tempted to get involved in this thread, as I have such strong feelings about trades unionists.
But as usual the comments are losing their relevance to the original post, so out of respect for Stephen I'll keep schtum.

UoC - I remain an optimist whilst accepting that there is scant
evidence here of the desire to "talk up" this old country and its
future. The word "defeatist" comes to mind in that respect.
To adapt an old adage: Faint heart never won fair future!

UoC - Ultimately, It should be about balance and respect.
A certain union leader is on record as trousering ÂŁ145,000 P.A,
(that's 6 figures, remember?) whilst occupying a social housing
unit. Where is the balance? Where is the respect for the less
rewarded infinitely more needy?

UoC - I was being generous when I used the term "alleged".-
How much did Arthur Scargill get when he led what
eager revisionists surely won't link to what was the prelude to the fossil fuel danger to the climate that is being made so much of today? Union leaders can be the equivalent of the reviled press barons for their use of power and its effects against
the wider public affecting the latter's ensuing reduced opportunities and
travel to places of work, often on and for far less income than the likes
of over-reaching train and tube drivers today.
Finally, offers to their membership should not be kept from that membership for a decision. (news report today).

God forbid that you should ever end up in a wheelchair, but I take it you wonât be complaining then, when you arrive at the railway station to find ticket office, information office, and toilets closed, to âsave moneyâ, (as had been planned) at the same time as rail shareholder dividends are at 65% ?

There is a story about a US President being conducted around Cape Kennedy (I guess it was then). After being shown all the high tech stuff and chatting to the managers and scientists he passed a bloke who's job was to clean the bogs.
"And what do you do here?" asked the Pres.
"Mr President, sir, I'm helping to put a man on the moon".
