Oh, sorry about that Lisa. The song was in my head which then sparked the idea for a poem. 30 minutes later....?

Really like this. The 50's were just before my time but I remember so many stories.
We're very lucky to live when we do and should appreciate all that we have.?

Loved it Trevor. The moor was actually on fire last week, but in the space of a few days I bet it's back to the chilly scene you have described here.

I totally relate to this as I just had a tree taken down that that fits this description. Cracked, rotted, unsafe. It was a long wrestled with decision. Sad to see the old boy go, but a new one will be planted in its place. Hopefully it will inspire the next generation to write wonderful poems!!

Trevor
You tell it 'like it was'
My father had T.B. my cousin had polio -
and the pantry was 'fullof bare shelves'
but we did not know that we were poor, we thought it was the same for every one. Now we know better.
Thank you for this one.
Dorothy

Just the right blend of cynicism, nostalgia and realism to give this an innate strength - the repetition of the plea in each stanza feels like a head banged against the wall. We are drawn in by the simple homily style but soon realize the depths of observation to come.
Splendido Trevor. Ray

The feeling of the helplessness and awareness of her situation gives such a strength in the character, and draws out our empathy Jonathan. A poem to inspire us and set an example.
All the best with your plans! Congratulations.

That's a great poem Trevor, and it highlights what was used to measure deprivation back then versus what measures are used now. It's no longer about food and housing...now you're poor if you haven't got a TV, computer, mobile phone. And of course you need an SUV to drive to the food bank.

Lovely piece Cynth. You do need to bulk up on your food don't you, while being treated? And I've always loved how you focus in on the small but essential parts of life. The little treats, the lovely blush :)

I promise not to bore you to death with 'chemo' stuff, but this little episode was so charming, I wanted to share it. Kind of a 'feel good' offering.
Laura, how did you pick this up so fast!! Like you're looking over my shoulder. JEEZ! This modern technology!. I love it!

Quite apart from that though, this is a really good poem about our current digital reality.

There was a dialect prompt this month anyway Trev so you're fine! And this is a great piece of work.

I don't think it necessary to know the dialect - there is enough of a glimmer of understanding to decipher this poem that makes me feel I am outdoors. Pulsing with wit and Yorkshire grit -,thanks

I didn't fancy the 'official' prompt today, so this is an attempt to write in Yorkshire dialect, even though I can't speak it properly. There may be a few unfamiliar words for those of you not of the Yorkshire persuasion, so there's a glossary of Yorkshire words here. https://imfromyorkshire.uk.com/yorkshire-sayings/

Congratulations on your well-deserved Poem of the Week, Jonathan. Good luck with your plan to take poetry workshops into schools - a great idea to try to deliver antidotes to the Gove/Gradgrind model of education. And at the same time, one can only be envious of your privileged position on the Tripe Marketing Board.

And so … we look back on a four-hour and 55-minute Poetry Day marathon at Woking literary festival, with all its hurly-burly. We had two glittering feature poets, Anum Salman and Robert Garnham, who in their very different ways provided marvellous moments. Nine newcomers to Write out Loud Woking - Ian Lee-Dolphin, Heather Cook, Tom McColl, 16-year-old Elodie Fenton, Trevor Breedon, Richard Hawtree, Rachel Woolf, Shirley Kirkoff, and Mary Pargeter. A total of 28 open-mic poets, that also included including Pete Jardine, David Russomano, Janet Collinson, Kitty Coles, Denise Bundred, Karen Izod, Karen Swaley, Daniel Jeffery, Janice Dempsey, Donall Dempsey, Ray Pool, Heather Moulson, Michael Cutchey, Geoffrey Pimlott, Andy BJ Low, Amanda Briggs, Lorri Pimlott, Chris Ross, and Matthew Paul. Grateful thanks to Frances Wood for manning the poetry bookstall throughout, and overseeing the sales of more than £100-worth of books. Not forgetting those indefatigable comperes, Greg Freeman and Rodney Wood. Thanks as always to the Lightbox for inviting us to be part of their festival, and awarding us a five-hour slot. If and when next year’s invitation comes around, I think five hours may be long enough!
