of those who remember them
the thunder obliterated a generation
that would benefit from the industry
of their fathers
who prayed it all would last
while bosses planned
to take away their livelihood and history
they piled the slurry
into an unreliable black mountain
towering over ever...

My Ninth Birthday
For the people of Aberfan, 50 years on.
October 21 1966. A day I will never forget.
MY NINTH BIRTHDAY
I’m sure it won’t surprise you to learn
I was a proper little show-off.

said my Victorian grandmother
who lived in the flat downstairs.
