An interesting look at life and its transiency Pete. Like Francine, I love the analogy and think the 'shells' have an awful lot of bearing on how we cope with it all...

Hmmm - relationships are not easy things to make work - particularly as you get older and have bad experience - it makes you scared of repeating mistakes. Perhaps we should just enjoy whatever honeymoon periods we can and try not to get too hung up about the failures - life is just too short. Back to the poem - the end of a relationship - beautifully expressed, as ever.

Anthony - not sure if you revisit poems to check for subsequent comments but I responded to you there. Just wanted to say that I am fond of you as a fellow poet - would never take serious offence by anything you said cos I can see that like Steve Regan - you just like to stir things up a bit cos you're mischevious. I like to stir things up too sometimes and you can't do a rant without a bit of venom - can you?

Thanks for your lovely comments on 'Cramping my Style' Gus and the great advice. I was a bit unsure about whether to include some of the singing parts (particularly the Queen ones) so perhaps didn't sing them with enough gusto. Will try to correct that next time I do it - I do have the lung capacity! LOL

Hi Pete,
I enjoyed this sad and wistful read very much. For me, (and I'm sure others will pick up on them too) it is so full of references to other works of the romantic/tragic genre - as if Tarantino had written a poem if you like! I admire this cross-referencing in your poetry, it allows us each to read something personal in what you write, helping us to identify emotionally with your sentiments by finding things in common.

The things it brought back to me were:

"I know that you don’t need me now"
(Chicago -"If you leave me now.")

"where the tracks meet"
The Doobie Brothers - "Long Train Runnin'."

"feels like fire sometimes"
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "The Power of Love."

"the fingers I used to touch"
Diana Ross - "Touch Me in the Morning."

"if I could change your mind"
Gladys Knight and the Pips - "Baby Don't Change Your Mind."

"on empty tables"
from Les Miserables - "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables"

"I trundle on tracks full of cable cars"
film - "A Streetcar Named Desire."

"heart hubs in romantic stations"
"about smoky meetings
in steam stations"
"soot in the eye to spark a dream of caring"
Film - "Brief Encounter."

These are probably not your intended references, but they did it for me. Thanks for the nostalgic reminders, you've shown me up for the big softie that I am. Really enjoyed.

Regards,
A.E.

Some very profound sentiments in this...

Love these lines:

when I know you are there
when you shared love
held the purity of something real
its difficult to let it go
cant be dropped
forever elevated'

It's like looking in a mirror...

Constant he annoys
And persistent I employ
Patience
To deal with the alcoholic
standard issue
reply of denial
He can stop any day he likes.

Great piece Peter

"I" wonder what inspired you to write this? Nice to hear your voice at last - very well presented! But it made me feel like "I" just got a good kicking - real venom in your words! Perhaps "I" deserved it. That will teach "me" to keep "my" big gob shut! Nice one!

This could be Poem of the Month for me. We're in an epidemic of alcohol abuse and at the end of the day it comes down to tragic precious individual people and how bloody difficult it is to help them get off the booze. My reaction is maybe a bit hypocritical as I started drinking 10 months ago after 37 years TT (and am enjoying it!) but the raw honesty of the poem and especially the ending is, as Cynthia says, universal. And very powerful - it looks deep into the soul

A brilliant poem Dave - so wasted on me and the Blue Boar last night - it has to be read and reflected on. You capture the meaninglessnes of what went on before so well - the importance is now - this moment and the next and being able to take that step...How many of us will be able to relate to that.

well I like the idea of putting your faith in the balloon.
Again a frustration almost a need to escape.
It is about finding the inner strength we all know it, but can we do it.

the balloon is propped up by helium sooner or later its going to seep out through the pores.

how long can we go on?

oh the poetic licence!!!!!!!
we love it.
