Waking Up In London

Waking up in London
what has the day in store?
We have a few things planned
can’t tell you any more

Hopefully tomorrow
I’ll have more news to tell
I’ll let you all know then
if the day has turned out well

I Just Don’t Get It

There’s a cost of living crisis
affecting each and everyone
So the politicians had a chat
to see what could be done

They called a mini budget
and the nation hoped and prayed
The results were disappointing
the country was left dismayed

They chose to borrow more
to increase the national debt
Eyewatering amounts
a dangerous and reckless bet

Lower taxes for high earners
as th...

Mandarin Ducks

Manderin ducks early this morning
as a brand new day has begun
As if mesmerised by its beauty
they line up to salute the sun

As they watch the ripples on the lake
gently reflect the golden light
The vibrant colour of their plumage
makes for quite a wonderful sight

Signs Of Autumn

Sunrise in the local woodland
a warm glow appears on the horizon
The dawn chorus sounds loud and proud
as the birds serenade the morning sun

Signs of autumn beginning to show
the first leaves already on the floor
Following the eternal cycle
that will continue for ever more

White Hydrangeas

My bountiful white hydrangeas
bringing a simple joy that can’t be beaten
Still giving us some pom pom love
gently easing us into the next season

Flowers that bloom into autumn
are always that little bit more precious
Even more so when they put on a show
so majestic and glorious

Give Up Mr Putin

Wake up Mr Putin
smell the coffee hot and strong
You may consider you are right
but you couldn’t be more wrong

Hear them Mr Putin
the strong women of your land
Not willing to give up their men
to risk their lives as you demand

Watch them Mr Putin
as the brave men turn and flee
Rejecting your coercive ways
and military call up plea

Wake up Mr Putin
your tactics are weak a...

Calm Morning

A misty but calm morning
marking the crossroads of seasons
The autumn breeze slightly chills
and the summer sunshine weakens

The start of summers goodbye
always bittersweet emotion
As we await the beauty
of autumn's vibrant explosion

Ducks In The Rain

Rain that is welcomed by some
and not so much by others
Ducks take an early shower
shake off their downy feathers

The morning downpour continues
splish splashing to the ground
Singing it’s song with each drop
a soothing beautiful sound

We Will Meet Again

She slowly opens her eyes and blinks
adjusting to the heavenly light
A warm and gentle smile appears
as her beloved husband comes into sight

He greets her with arms open wide
holds her in a long awaited embrace
His heart filled with much love and pride
streams of silent tears roll down his face

He guides her towards a wooden bench
where hand in hand they take a seat
She rests he...

Just A Number

Respectful silence fills the air
as the mass exhumations begin
What was once a peaceful woodland
gives up the secrets held deep within

Rows and rows of crude makeshift graves
a simple wooden cross marks each one
Just a number
for each father, mother, sister, brother daughter, son

Lives taken far too soon
victims of cruel violence and war
As the world once again begs the question

Marmalade Hues

This mornings sunrise at the lake
marmalade hues smother the sky
From behind the towering trees
a warm, honey flare greets the eye

Night slowly turns into day
but not before putting on a show
Such a spectacular sight
it’s only right to soak in the glow

By The Lancaster Canal

A short ride on the Waterwitch
followed by a stroll and picnic stop
Sometimes it’s the simple things in life
that are difficult to top

A beautiful autumnal day
the sun shone high in the bright blue sky
Cows and sheep grazed in lush green fields
whilst ducks and swans slowly glided by

The turquoise flash of a kingfisher
caught everyone’s attention
The heron came in second place...

Interesting Read

I came across this on Facebook this morning. I enjoyed reading it and thought other WOL members may like it too. It's an example of a rhyming story entered into a competition. There is a new competition coming up soon.

Rich Tapestry

Amended slightly

A single thread weaves its way
through the tapestry of life
Marking cherished moments
along with times of trouble and strife

Continuous, unbroken fibre
of remarkable strength
Steadfastly interlaced through the years
seven decades in length

History depicted
creating this intricate crewel
Pertinant to each and everyone
this most precious jewel

Brave Robin

He came along and stole my heart
now he wears it upon his chest
Friendly, handsome and courageous
proudly puffing out his red breast

Perching himself on a low branch
he joins us for a bite to eat
Boldly takes a crumb from my hand
a moment so tender and sweet

The Cortege

Breathtaking birds eye views
showcasing Scottish landscape scenes
Sunshine and bright blue skies
over fields and trees lush and green

Through the verdant valleys
along the long and winding road
Trailing the river’s gentle flow
bearing it’s precious load

A sight to bring welling tears

A Wonderful Image

A wonderful image
restoring much hope to the nation
Brothers reunited
at this time of great tribulation

A scene to make their Grandmother proud
their Mother and Father too
A sight the country has waited to see
so long overdue

Hats off to them all
for putting their differences aside
A welcomed show of unity
at this most difficult time

Our Queen

Amended version

The whole country is in mourning
for our constant strength and stay
As the passing of our Queen
was sadly announced on this day

Shockwaves rippled across the world
to each corner of our nation
Her passing has brought much sorrow
spanning every generation

For seventy years she reigned
until ninety six years of age
Unwavering service and duty
a lifetime spent ...

RIP Her Majesty The Queen

As much as we all hoped and prayed
today our worst fears came true
Earlier I wrote some words
hoping Her Majesty would pull through

Alas the news followed shortly
about the passing of our Queen
Images and words shared far and wide
the likes of we have never seen

I can’t find the right words just now
to say how this news makes me feel
I think it will take time to sink in
and to ...

Her Majesty

Waiting impatiently for news
yet not wanting to hear it too
All thoughts are with her Majesty
to hope and pray is all we can do

A strange atmosphere closes in
enveloping the whole nation
Feeling unsettled and concerned
there is an air of trepidation

A constant in all our lives
as we thought she would always be
On hearing the news today
we face a different reality

I think ...

The good, the bad and the ugly

This morning we waited on important news
that would affect our future wealth
How quickly our concerns change
on hearing of a downturn in our Queens health

Now the whole country is united
in wishing her Majesty all the best
As we pray for her speedy reco...

New PM

We’ve got a new PM
Boris is out and Liz is in
She must be thinking right now
where the hell do I begin

The country is in a mess
so much is wrong not much is right
She needs to prove to us all
that she is up for the fight

The fight for all our futures
our future safety and health
Our childrens education
our economy and wealth

We wait in anticipation
not knowing what this...

Cloudy Outlook

High above the fluffy clouds
sky blue is streaked with hazy white
Where cotton wool mountains grow
and the dazzling sun shines bright

Below us a snowy carpet
gives the illusion of solid ground
Melting away as we glide through
where the dull and grey can be found

Coming home from holiday
as disheartening as melting snow
Sun and fun is left far behind
and now it’s back t...

When A Robin Appears

They say, when robins appear
loved ones are near
Some comfort he may bring
when he starts to sing
Whatever the reason
whatever the season
He can often be found
in the garden, hanging around
A pleasure to see
and full of personality

The Covid pandemic would not kill everyone
yet we spent billions protecting us all from catching the virus

Starvation and hypothermia would kill anyone
how much is being spent protecting us all from this crisis

Innocent And Young

There are guns on the streets
shooting the innocent and young
There are knives on the streets
stabbing the innocent and young

There are murderers on the streets
killing the innocent and young
There are young ones on the streets
killing the innocent and young

of all the news reports I hear
But I know when I hear each one
it fills me with dread and f...

First Of September

Hedgerows full of summer wildflowers
set against softly coloured sunrise
The perfect view to start September
as the summer slowly fades and dies

Scent of autumn carries on the wind
and there’s a chilly breeze in the air
There’s still just enough of summer left
so enjoy each moment you have spare
