Nothing Left To Say

When you say

you don't know

what to say

are you

saying that

just to delay

the sadness

in the parting

of our ways

it's over when

there's nothing

left to say.

Uluru

On ancient ground

stands this red red rock

sacred sandstone

dotted with fissures

cliffs and caves

left paintings of the past

which tell of the lands creation

like an animal

sleeping on its side

so large

so dramatic

it sparks the imagination

awakens our wonderment

could it actually be alive?

are we Lilliputians

standing on a gentle giant?

we must...

May Cause Drowsiness

There are all those drugs

on the aisle that say

"May Cause Drowsiness"

the very word

makes you drowsy

hear how it sounds

so sleepy so droopy

like eyelids ready to close

just pronouncing the word drowsy

makes you drowsy

this poem

may make you drowsy as well

my poems seem to

have that effect on people

but take it anyway

swallow it...

I Rest My Case

It's not hard on me anymore

I can relax and take it easy

there is no reason to worry

or stress out because of

not knowing what to do

my wife

makes all the decisions for me

so I don't have to decide a thing

she tells me what to do

and where to go

my brain is now freed up

and I can rest it thoroughly

in mindless things

there are days when I just

Forgotten Child

What becomes of those

whose birthday falls

on Christmas eve or

Christmas day

they get shut out

and are appalled

that their birthdays

get skipped this way

no cards, no cakes

they are ignored

for Christmas gifts

are all assigned

In holidays

all are absorbed

we forget the child

so hurt inside

unremembered

and deceived

one cannot kno...

Birthday Cards

When birthdays

come around

always the gathering

the giving of gifts

the blowing out of candles

the slicing of cake

the happy birthday song

the opening of cards

those cards composed

by someone else

but which hold a special message

that someone had to choose

having spent a long time in the aisle

going through them one by one

reading them

putting...

Body Shaming

Now that I am in

the early stages of rigor mortis

I am still so proud of my body

I do not have to live in shame

nor hide its many flaws

people on Twitter would say

I am too fat, too out of shape,

too un-hip and un-chic

but now I just ignore their negativity

and show them my disdain

I disregard their snarky comments

and put up another selfie

as I see it

m...

Paying The Piper

If you can't agree

with what I say

we agree on

very little

We argue

all the night away

can't ever meet

in middle

After words exchanged

become deranged

lawyers argue

for acquittal

Who pays the piper

calls the tune

in jail there's time

to fiddle.

Men Don't Read Instructions

MEN DON'T READ INSTRUCTIONS

in fact men

barely read at all

why deal with all those complications

it's easier to wing it

and hope for the best

that's why you have unicycles

they were supposed to be bicycles but

a man didn't read the instructions

when it comes to medication

men seldom read the directions

they just swallow hard

they figure if it says one pill

Do Not Go Gentle If You Dislike

Do not go gentle into that good night

so say old men who play till dusk of day

and rage against the dying of the light

Though wise men know their Dominoes are right

still must avoid the nagging of their wives

who scold them long into the dark of night

Good men, who run the table think they're bright

they drink their beer and smoke their crooked pipes

grown us...

Hard Saddle, Hard Life

it ain't no fun

sittin on a hard saddle

for 12 hours straight

pushin steers up the trail

chokin on their dust

and smelllin their back ends

till you end up smellin like them

i wisht for a bath

and a beautiful woman

to wash away tons of trail dirt

and sooth my achin bones

it's a hard life

this cattle trail business

not the romance it's played up ...

Unassisted Living

Age can be counted

in many ways

rings on trees

teeth in horses

gray hair

wrinkles

slow speech

limping

and finally

loss of memory

but if you are

optimistic

age is

just a word

people live to be

over 100

and still live great lives

I would like to be

one of those fortunate few

so I make my plans

to live on

despite those...

Mexico Moon

The Mexico moon

   shines on its brown dirt

like a round tortilla

   baked into the peasants

who work in the sun

the Mexican moon

  spotlights the pyramids

shining on the serpents

carved by the children of slaves

Mexican moon

  sweeping over the Rio

as brown as the river

or the backs of the swimmers

who cross with only a bundle

Homemade Cards

thank you

for being

silly and fun

I love you so much

because

you play with me

I drew you

a dragon

like you like

it was fun

when you squirted us

with the hose

you scare us at night

in bed

with that scary sound

you always tickle us

we run away

& hide

special cards

made by hand

in a special file

Blue Sky

Looking up at

the Blue Sky outside

the blue sky

covers all

in beauty

in warmth

in hope

Blue Sky

says the obvious

you picked the perfect day

to be outside

a sky this blue

is a promise

for the future

and I am so glad

at my age

you can never have enough

Blue Skies.

The Commission For Less Education

The Commission for Less Education

is holding a conference this week

and is requesting all join together

to help us stamp out

the most alarming development

in the history of mankind

the spread of Education

there has been a steady rise

in higher education over the past 100 years

as people have invested millions

in education and teacher's retirement plans

Sad Returns

Caskets

on arriving planes

bring home our boys

their sad remains

back to this land

which was their own

America

they're finally home

Salutes abound

sad bugles play

and medals shine

but can't repay

what was the price

of this sad day

these boys came home

in graceless ways

At this sad sight

there was no joy

these boys found death

Encouragement

All poets really want

is a little encouragement

we need that kind word

any bit of praise

some encouragement

to continue

we need that connection

on the other end

wait for a response

anticipate reaction

without it

we are just lost words

fumbling for a phrase

hoping for a period.

A Lighthearted Poem

My poems are

lighthearted

with humor

I send

Some say

more light-Headed

which I

can't defend

No resistance

contended

no excuses

for them

To wit

they're intended

to permit a

quick end.

Lettter To A Cousin

Your letter

describing your youth

and fond memories

of going to dances

as a young girl

must mean you are

finally feeling better

and on a good path toward healing

some comfort comes at last

I don't know how you do it

the inability to do simple things

like walking to the mail box

or opening a jar

Dishplay

Dishes come

and dishes go

too many dishes

mar the scene

we pile them high

we pile them low

we stack in rows

in the machine

and when we think

we're finally done

another dish

someone will bring

re-stacked and packed

no end it seems

paper plates appeal

far less to clean

with paper plates

good for one meal

there's nothing l...

Hate On Trial

The courtroom packed

the woman accused of shooting a Black man

turns out to be a white cop

headlines for another protest or riot

the stoking of hot tempers

the burning of cars and businesses

the breaking of glass

the crushing of reason

people and press await the sentence

but into all of this steps the victim's brother

who faces the accused

charged with mu...

Sent From Typewriter

This typewriter

sits on a shelf in a barn in Texas

I found it by accident

which was perfect since

most of my poems ARE accidents

or at minimum, CAUSE accidents

so this message is not sent from

an I-phone or some electronic device

you won't see that little blurb here

that says Sent From I-Phone

Last Car

Looking for a new car

a new used car that is

the wife says

make it a good one

at your age

it's the last car you'll ever buy

I give her a worried look

what did she mean by that?

am I that close?

I have not been to the doctor for years

I have not been hospitalized

so what is she implying

I don't even want to think about it

maybe she's thinki...

Cold Front

It is October now

but it has been so hot

people do not feel like doing anything

all energy drained

they sit inside

soothing their bones with air-conditioning

when will the heat give us a break

could we have just one day of Autumn

to give us some relief from this unrelenting sameness

Summer should be over yet it stubbornly persists

as the ground cracks and
