It is October now

but it has been so hot

people do not feel like doing anything

all energy drained

they sit inside

soothing their bones with air-conditioning

when will the heat give us a break

could we have just one day of Autumn

to give us some relief from this unrelenting sameness

Summer should be over yet it stubbornly persists

as the ground cracks and

the grass burns up

we become toads hiding in holes

waiting for that first cold front

brave enough

to cross the Red River

and blow into Texas

bucking wildly

like a bronc

let out of the gate.
