More Important Things

I write when umbrellas open

When I am late for work

When the building is on fire

When the dog needs food

When the party is over

When I should really get moving

I write when there are more important things

And there are always always always

More important things--

Living in this world

And choosing to write poetry

Makes about as much sense as

Sitting on ...

Epigraph

Should I fall dead before the morning light,

In letters on my nameless tombstone write:

                          'Éramos hasta fuimos,

The Haze

I imagine living in the haze

          Between dreaming and waking--

The soft noise on the telephone

            Just before she speaks

The blank paper beneath the last words of a book

          The snow visible by streetlamps

The world sleeping under the cosmic shroud

            Where starlight leaks

No Man Has Seen Tomorrow

    Don't waste your time

Chasing after tomorrow

You cannot catch it

Before it becomes today

     Todays are all we have

We endure many of them

One after another;

We know nothing else

     No man has seen tomorrow.

Until

For most things in life

We either were, or we will

But for the things that we are

     We are only until

We fly until we fall

We laugh until we cry

We love until we lose

     We live until we die

'Until' is a sad word--

     It signifies temporariness

If you've happened upon my work

No one who has met me

You have no idea who I am

You know me better than anyone

Talent

Sometimes people have the nerve

To call me 'talented'

And it really pisses me off

Talent does not exist

It is a word invented by the untalented

Because they don't understand hard work

Skills are earned

With blood and sweat;

No one is born with them

The talented are practiced

The untalented are lazy

It's as simple as that

Stop blaming fate for...

I Wish To Be Forgotten

People are obsessed with memory

When loved ones die, we keep their photos

Even after their time,

We try so hard to keep things alive

And it makes me wonder

If it was ever willed by the universe

That we should remember anything at all.

I don't think permanence is natural

I don't want to be remembered forever

I only want to exist

As nature would have it

But I didn't ...

Scientists & Poets

Do not trust scientists,

For the scientists are simply those

Who know how to say 'I don't know'

In the fanciest, most eloquent ways.

Do not heed the words of poets;

We too are blind.

We have no special understanding of the world;

We just speak our misunderstandings with a silver tongue.

I warn you--

Beware the scientists and the poets;

Do not mistake ambigui...

When I Can't Find the Words

Sometimes I'm unable to write

     And it scares me

Because when I can't find the words

     It feels like I'm dying

So I have to remind myself

That it's okay to be silent for a while--

The key is just to stop trying

Window Drawing

I remember riding on the train

chugging slowly through the winter rain

                      drawing pictures in the fog

                        on the car windows

Motherly Love

In the fifth grade, I told my teacher a lie

     And she called my mother

And I remember thinking,

     'I'm gonna die'

When I arrived home

     Mother gave me that look--

The one that says,

'You're about to get a licking'

And I got it,

     And it hurt bad,

And when it was over

     She told me:

Returning To Poetry

Well, I'm writing poetry again.

I used to write when I was younger--

It wasn't good, but it rhymed at least

And after a while I got bored of it

But sometime later in my scholastic endeavors,

I would give into the popular demand

(Of my mother and father)

And enroll in a university

Late in the September of my first year

I finally began to write again;

Not beca...

My Poetry Is Not Dark

One time in school

I was writing a poem about

How I wanted to drown

A teacher saw it

The Game We All Play

Life is but a simple game

The one with the knight, rook, and pawn

The question is which piece you are

And, of course, which side you're on

All games begin the same

With a blank slate

Endless possibilities

Your choices determine your fate

At first you have much freedom

You can move about and make mistakes

Soon, circumstance governs your every act;

You try to make th...

The things we fall

The things we fall

We fall down

We fall short

We fall behind

Dying Stars

I know it's vain to wish upon a star

But don't our wishes make us who we are?

It's weird to think how old the starlight is

Took years and years and then some to arrive

Sometimes I wonder if the stars I see

Are in the sky above me still alive

I knew a star once

She shone in my dark nights

Guided me when I was lost

My wish was to know her

But like many distant stars

Bad World

Imagine I said,

'The world is a bad place'

Now think of all the things

That make it bad

List them in your head

Now imagine

That humans did not exist

And try

To list the things

That make the world a bad place

Depressing, huh?

So I guess

We should probably stop saying the 'world' is bad

When we're the ones who marred whatever good it could've had

Congratulations

To be an artist

Is a painful thing

Because your success

Depends on your suffering

To be an artist

Means to hurt professionally.

Should the suffering cease,

Art becomes impossible

People think art takes trying

But trying is wrong.

Art is not the product of effort

Nor is it inspired by choice

If you have to try

You're not an artist.

He can do just about

Anything.

On a Straight Road At Dusk

I am on my bicycle

And clouds hang above

But there are miles between

Me and my home still

The road before me

Is straight as a line

With nothing but trees

On either side

The clouds bring dusk

Before its time

And the light retreats

Quicker by the minute

I feel a drop

Then another

And soon enough

The rain is upon me

I pedal harder

I used to think I feared insanity

But now I think

I wouldn't mind it terribly

After all,

It can't possibly be

Much worse than

Having clarity and reason;

It is the sane who drink.

I also used to think

That thinking led to answers

But it doesn't--

Thinking only leads to more questions

I passed a tree

And wondered

How many things it had seen

How many more perhaps than even me

Why a Fly?

Earlier today there was a fly

Buzzing around my head

And I had a thought:

Flight is a truly spectacular thing

There are so many creatures on Earth

Capable of it

Yet there is only one whose name

Is derived from the phenomenon itself

There are lots of things that fly

And we chose this wingèd nuisance why?

The Hurt Man

Tonight I was on the bus

And in its pale light

I saw a dirty man

Sitting to my right

His jacket was wet

From rain and mud

And from under his sleeve

Ran a dark stream of blood

I bothered to ask

What had brought him to harm

But he told me it was nothing

And covered his arm

He was surely in pain

And chilled to the bone

From his soaking-wet clot...
